Why don't you believe in God?
Posted 5/19/11
Cause I have a brain and know how to use it. It still surprises me how in this day an age, with all the knowledge available to us that people still reverently believe in fairy tales. You don't even have to be a genius to see that none of the religious texts correctly explain what goes on in our world/universe.

I also don't require some morally ambiguous scripture telling me what to do. I follow the law, help people out, donate to charities etc. out of my own conscience. I don't do it to buy my way into heaven.

The fact that God is not something I can confirm with my own senses is the reason why I don't believe. More than that, it's not something that can even be supported logically.

I used to believe but "faith" is pretty thin gruel and the "G"od i was sold on as a child seems on the whole not really worthy of all the praise it's believers heap upon it. I can't be bothered with a "power" that can't even be bothered to show up for work. I'm perfectly capable of leading an ethical life without all the mumbo-jumbo hocus-pocus that the average joe seems to need just to get out of bed.

I attended an elementary Catholic school, but despite the fact that we had Mass pretty much every Friday and a whole class devoted to Religion, I just never really felt all that close to God, I guess you could say. When I was little I never told anyone I didn't really believe in Him because it seemed like everyone else around me did. As I grew up and became more independent though, I gradually realized that I get a lot more out of believing in myself then faking praying in front of old friends.

I don't feel I have been given enough reasoning to.

But part of me is also childishly refusing to believe in God because I think he is more of a cruel dictator, unworthy of my worship.

Because, let's put it this way. There are many ways to know your world and live in it. And how you live in it, will depend on how you know it. And vice versa.

Religion is merely one way way of knowing and living the world out of many other ways. However, your way of knowing and living in this world should be made from your OWN experiences. Not the ones started by your parents or whoever else that's of supposedly "higher authority" in your life.

If your parents and the people around you just shove religion into you, it's much like brainwashing. Because once you believe in God, God is real. And there doesn't have to be a logical reason. God's existance is just as real as your own existance, it's like how you know that a square has four sides or that you're constantly breathing oxygen. It just is and there's nothing you can do about it and it's ABSOLUTE.

From a psychological point of view, this is constructed into your brain from a young age (in which you are most vulnerable to being strongly influenced by what you are told by third parties) to create a cognitive process schema. Therefore, it becomes your automatic way of thinking and "knowing".

I want to know the world from my own experiences without having other people affect me. I want to see how my life's experiences and questioning everything will shape who I am, how I think and know and ultimately, how I live my life, really...

Because God is a human invention from thousands of years ago to explain things they don't understand. People want to believe they can be reunited with loved ones when they pass away. I do not believe in these things, I do believe in ethics and morality and learned behavior developed over a person's lifetime, but I only believe that when I die it's lights out and no more.

Well my concept of God isnt Cristian to begin wit,,,,,i do think things weren't created accidentally,,,,thou i dont think God is some human/being watching over our businesses since he/she as a ruler must have something truly interesting to focus on.....and im also sure God doesn't need our good intentions (faith) to keep on going ANYWAYS,,,,,"Universal Laws" is what i acknowledge as godly like.....but aside from those i cant say i feel very connected to religious nor scientifical believes :P.....more like philosophical i guess.......
I DO BELIEVE IN GOD AS AN ABSTRACT CONCEPT THOU
