Hmm I haven't noticed any problems with mine, but the fan gets pretty loud if I play it on a hot day.

The original run of the ps3 is notorious for overheating problems. So many posts online about it, and mine also has had that issue before a few times especially during the summer when my apartment is hotter than normal. I have 2 friends that have the newer slimline ones, and both of them have not had issues with them. I will say a big determining factor is where you house yours, if it's in an entertainment system with mediocre air circulation/ventilation it exasperates the problem 10 fold :/

I honestly can't imagine firmware patching a physical issue such as overheating unless it's a matter of overclocking or something silly like that.
