Badge contests are bandwidth and time wasters

I saw your post about the Amazon.com contest, so I thought I'd give it a try. My feedback: what a waste of time.

After watching We, Without Wings about twice, and 11eyes one and half times and only getting 2/4 and 3/5 badges for each, then reading the forum for this contest, it is clear to me that these contests are insane (and frankly, lame). You only get a random badge, and it seems some are incredibly rare. Folks in that forum are streaming these episodes in the background just to try to get these. One person posted only getting 16/23 after 100 playthroughs. Some people are saying that they are streaming 10 at a time.

This is crazy. While performance on the site has been OK of late for me, encouraging multiple background playthroughs just to get a badge just wastes bandwidth, both for you and for anyone who has limits. I'm a premium subscriber, so I don't contribute to ad revenue, but I can't imagine advertisers want to pay for 100s of ads that no one is watching just because of a contest.

And in the end, getting the badges is still no guarantee of winning (though the likelihood that many will go through the pain of doing this makes the odds somewhat good). The only sane way to run these contests is to guarantee that everyone who streams an entire series gets all the badges for that one. Otherwise, people quickly catch on that the contest is not worth the effort, and the whole purpose is to encourage viewing of these series (once), isn't it?

If contests like this end up as revenue makers, there's no real problem here...

That being said, I do agree that the amount of episodes required to get all the badges in the latest contest is ridiculous. At least it should give me better odds of winning though (assuming the final badge gets added before the deadline)

I say they should just make a badge contest for one huge series like Reborn or the Naruto one they had for example so that way we don't have to watch more than one series on 10 different tabs trying to collect all the badges. Cause I would mind a badge contest for a series I love especially Reborn.

Or have a badge contest with series that are actually good to watch more than once all the way through and make it a tad bit easier to collect badges cause playing 1,000 something episodes just for 23 badges is just ridiculous. I probably wouldn't have minded it too much if they gave us a month or so to complete it, but only a week? Thats impossible unless you have very good internet speed or a good browser that doesn't crash easily.

Overall they need to make the badge contests a tad bit easier and decrease the numbers of episodes you have to watch to get them. Cause 1,000 episodes in just a week is way too much and near impossible unless you have a good connection and computer that can handle all that.

What you said is good and all but thats about 400 hours to get 23 badges? If someone were to do this legitimate then this would just be impossible to do without cheating. There are only 168 hours a full week. To watch that much anime without doing absolutely nothing at all but watching anime would be a minimum of at least 2 1/2 weeks. That is with doing nothing but watching anime back to back with no sleep eating or anything else. That is just insanity. There really need to be better rules or implementations of the badges if CR is going to do contests like this. I personally didnt even bother with this contest as the last contest was just ridiculous enough to get all the badges.

While I can see additional viewing by free members driving up revenue, I cannot see additional viewing by premium members doing anything but costing CR. Even if the contract for the series requires only a flat payment from CR regardless of views, there is still the cost of bandwidth.

Usually companies like CR get a very good deal and do not pay much for bandwidth costs it more on the server side and being able to keep up with demand and not having the site crash, when it comes to big events like this. That's usually is what can be expensive.

There are questions whether it does or not, but that's why I said if. But honestly though, if CR doesn't make anything from it I really wonder why they would make the contest even harder this time, and in doing so ruling out any chance of people getting all badges while actually watching the episodes.
