Do You Believe The World Be Better Without A God To Believe In?
Posted 5/27/11
Yeah because then people can start learning to believe in themselves and what they're capable of instead.

I don't think so. Belief in a deity/deities has inspired much of our greatest art and literature, giving rise to a lot of beauty. Belief also gives many people a lot of comfort, in that they feel that someone is looking out for them. My view is that if belief guides and inspires people it can be a good thing.

Obviously belief can be taken to the extreme, producing the likes of Al Quaida whose beliefs drive them to hate. However, IMO if religion were taken out of the equation people would just find another reason to hate and kill each other.

The believe in some form of religion has been a basic part of society for a very long time. Without that then everyone would have to accept that our species is an evil incredibly violent animal. Religion indoctrinates people to think that everyone is essentially good. Now as to whether there is a God or other diety is another issue for a another day.

If the god was absolute, perfect, and truly divine.

Then I guess things would be way better as long as everyone was aware of the god's presence.

the real problem is the way people think...but i guess if religion didn't exist it would be one less think for people to think about and they wouldn't have disputes...

No, there'd be a lack of hope.

Well, love, I'm an expert on this topic. I'll take over from here.

Pacifistic religions actually don't require any violence-- in fact, they shun it as well as discrimination. Islamic, Christianity, and Catholicism (just to name the big three) has remained in power largely because of prejudice and violence. Regardless of their methods, it is effective to brainwash children by giving them a long list of 'sins' the other side has committed.

Diehard pacifism is hard to find in religion nowadays, because most religion tells you to hate the other side on the basis they're on the other side.

Imagine if all that time wasted worshipping was used to get things done instead. We already live in a world without god, people just don't want to know that.

No. I don't know how man connected the idea of God to something communal, don't know how the world 'religion' came to be. For all i know, it has no meaning. It's like coining a word for eating while watching TV. Confusing analogy, sorry, but true. God, Providence, is our own individual conscience. We might name each of our 'Gods' differently. It's knowing what is right and what's not. So yes, the world probably would have been better w/o religion, but God is fine by me.

So w.o a conscience, the human race might have been extinct by now for all we know.

it would be so much better if there weren't all these religions that help justify slavery and genocide. the world would probably still be crappy but people wont be able to hide there evil acts and thoughts behind their religion. then maybe normal people wont turn a blind eye on it.

I personally don't think believing in a made up supernatural deity is necessary for morals, hope, unity or whatever. But I won't say it's the root of all evil (no matter how witty I think is sounds :D). After all it's a man made concept. If it didn't exist people would probably find something else to fight over/divide/use as a front to terrorize and go to war for. Kind of like religion is not the problem but the fanatics and the people who follow blindly withought thinking for themselves.
