Short and dirty:
1. Prizes: 3 stars and 2 shirts offered.
2. Write a 1 200 to 10 000 word short story or poem.

Table of Contents: [use ctrl-f and type in the number value (ex. to find welcome message)
[1] - Welcome!
[2] - The Prizes.
[3] - Tools and tips
[4] - Rules
[.5] - The submission method.

[1] If it's one thing I've learned during my time as a member of this website, it is that there is a lot of hidden talent here. You see Painters, Photographers, Graphic designers, Profile Poets and Writers here on Crunchyroll, just hanging around in the wood-work. The goal of this contest is to draw some of those people out into the open and for them to display their talent to the rest of the community.

This is a Short Story - Long poem contest. Short stories are generally short tales that have a deep moral lesson or theme(Note: They don't have to be. Yours can be whatever you want it to be). It's not a requirement, but it'd be cool if you'd include an author's note about this subject in your story. Your story will be judged in part on the strength of its theme that it conveys to us, the judges.
When I say contest, I mean that there will be Prizes

[2] Here is what is up for grabs.
2 Crunchyroll 1-month donation statuses (Donated by myself)
2(?) Crunchyroll T-shirts (Donated by Shinji)
1 star (The judge Miss Julia_hotcocoa is having a "best personal pick" award. Also, she rocks)

[3] Tips and tools
The official group sponsor for this contest is the Crunchyroll Society of Folklore and Story.
Tools
I.) http://www.crunchyroll.com/group/The_CR_Society_of_Folklore_and_Story
This is the official home-away-from home for the writers of this contest. Meet your fellow contestants, submit your entry, and just have fun.

II.) http://www.openoffice.org
For those sending out just files via email attachments (Note: If you submit by email, send to [email protected] ) or download links, here is a good solid word processor to do your work in.
-= Tips=-

I.) This is as much of a learning experience as a contest. So interact in this topic and in the discussion topics in the group, and in this thread. Exchange ideas, read betas, and have fun.

II. Beta your own work submitting it. Myself and the judges won't judge too much on grammar, but make sure the right message is conveyed. Don’t worry if you aren’t too great at English either.

III You will have a 1-month deadline. Even if you wrote 20ish pages, that's not even a page a day, so don't stress ^^

IV. Above all, I don't care if you don't think you can write. EVERYONE can write, you just have to bring it in yourself >< Believe cramit! Everyone here is probably an Amateur any ways.

[4] - Basic Rules:
I. Absolutely, positively, no way, no how, will there be plagiarism. It will be an instant drop from the contest.

II. No adult content for mainstream. Pg-14 is about as high as it can go. You may send it to Dusterbayala though.

III. The submission must be between about 1200-10000 words. That works out to roughly ~20 at max, and 5 pages min. (being 500 words a page) Otherwise, ignore page number and just go with word-count. English only please.

IV. Fanfiction submissions are allowed.
But please be reminded that you must include s disclaimer of copyright (“This studio or author owns this anime/manga, not myself!”) and part of it's judgment points will be character authenticity.

V. *IMPORTANT!* It's common for contests to insert a key to prevent story stealing. For this contest, I will ask that you insert two references to Chemical or alchemical references. . Chemistry is the science of stuff so just reference a change in matter. A boulder being shattered, a drink being frozen, something tasting salt-like, whatever. Highlight this please in your submission. And yes, using them in metaphors is perfectly cool. Think things like, "The air in here was cold enough to freeze water", you can use metaphors, likenings, just the words themselves, and anything from those subjects.
A member put this nicely, so please thank her.

The use of chemistry has been stated before..

"5. *IMPORTANT!* It's common for contests to insert a key to prevent story stealing. For this contest, I will ask that you insert two references to chemistry history, chemical reaction, or just the word chemistry. Highlight this please in your submission. And yes, using them in metaphors is perfectly cool. Think things like, "The air in here was cold enough to freeze water". Things like that.
you can use
Metaphors(“In life, there really was no one answer, not like the Quicksilver the old alchemists searched for”),
likenings (The air smelled like sulfur)
Just the words themselves (“there existed a certain chemistry between them), and anything from those subjects."

Just give reference to either the word "chemistry" or something that is linked to chemistry.

It could be as easy as saying (Okay.. *digs out my chemistry notes..*)

~~ He deposited the contents of the bag. The rocks clattered to the bench top disturbing the silence. Then it got risky. He placed a small pile in a solid stone container, and started pouring (haha I put purring here just then..) the moonlight liquid over it. He heated this solution and with delight, watched as riches formed before him.

Haha okay, that was just a random thing when I searched for gold extraction and purification; I just created from this fact sheet " Amalgamation is a mercury based process which works because of gold's willingness to be dissolved by mercury. The mercury is applied on an ore, picks up the gold, and the resulting amalgam is distilled, with the mercury being boiled off to remove it.". So that is in reference to "chemical - reaction".

For something uhm less involved with "chemistry"..

~~The water splashed on the dusty window. It went splat and scattered a little. The little girl watched in amazement as the drop formed into the perfect circle- pure and holy. Suddenly the windscreen wipers removed that piece of bond between her and the transparent formula.

Now that was in reference to water as a polar molecule (aka water attracts water).

Something simpler and shorter.. (uh this is hard ><)

Oh! ~~ The flower wilted.

The use of "chemistry" doesn't have to be very blunt, it can be very subtle. It isn't the theme, so you don't have to write a story on the history of how chemical elements were found. Even in a love story, "the chemistry between them is inseparable (like ionic bonds)" should be fine.

VI. All but the obscene and offensive genres are open. Write whatever you want.

[.5] VII. Submission can be made two in two ways.
You can email me a download link or an email attachment and send it to:
[email protected]
OR
You can go to The CR Society of Folklore and Story and create your own topic in the forum. The title should look like [datehere]-title-Timeline You have 1 month. Starting the 15th of January and
ending Febuary 15th on Midnight (PST).

IX. Judgments will be made a week or two after that.

X. You must have a title, intelligible font, 12pt and it’d be nice if (if you submit by attachment) set it at 1.5 spacing.

XI. No racist or offensive speech. All forum rules apply to this contest.

XII. If I say the entry is unacceptable, it is. Don't argue.

XIII. The Cake is a lie.
Note: Try to make things as easy as possible for the judges to evaluate, so maybe character bios, or glossaries (These sort of devices will NOT be deducted out of your word count, so no worries).

XIV. Poetry is allowed, but it must be able to hit that 1200 word marker. Yes, it's possible. Works like Dante's inferno demonstrate that.

Please use the group Jorlwind highlighted in his first post. More detailed questions may be asked in that group.

I won't answer any specific questions because this was Jorl's idea, however, if you get stuck, and need some advice, i'm happy to give it.

Edit:

Just a note... If you want to write an "adult" story.. PM those to me, or email them to [email protected] I will give out a prize for the adult stories.
*grin*

It is more than acceptable to me if you wish to dictate some policy shelley. Anyways, as I stated in the post, you can either post them in a separate topic in the group, or PM me a link so that I may download the script and add it to a database.

aw, i wanna do this! i love writing, but i don't know if i can finish in a month. i'll have to really get inspired this time!

I don't see how time could be an issue. o.o The limit is around an ill-defined 20 pages, and I've put out 15 in one night before. If you do about ~2/3 a night you should be alright.

please explain this. DOes it mean we need to write a story which will include 'Chemistry history' 'chemical reaction' 'chemistry' in a sentence?

No, I mean you can use metaphors, likenings, just the words themselves, and anything from those subjects. That gives you enormous flexibility

Hylia wrote:

Damn, i'll totally be in... if i didnt suck that much at writing in english... And even tho i could translate my texts, i doubt the results will be the same.

Anyway, here is 3 question:

-Can it be "broken" in short stories?

For example, 30 short stories of 1 page? or 15 shorts story, one every 2 days?
Of course they would have to be all sent in ONE PM because keeping everything organised would be a living hell if it wasnt that way~

-Can someone apply with more than 1 story? or its one story by person?

I was use to write a impressive amount of stories and little texts before. I was wondering if someone who wanted t submit 2 of their story could do it... Its all a question of organisation.

-Is the stories gonna be "published" on CR ?

As much as i love to write, i hate to see someone taking my texts and making them their whitout giving me credits. I was use to post them in forums and such alot, then i realised they was spreading arround and i was very sad to see that i wasnt credited, so i stopped.
I just wanted to know if all the contestant stories will be published on CR.
Some may like it, its always fun to have people reading what you wrote ~

PS: I admit i smiled on rule 13... *sigh* im hopeless
PS2: Kazuma, it was kinda mean ~ Its a fun project. pppfffttt =P

For the sake of Judge's time, it's going to have to be 1 story a person. However, your 1 text can contain as many stories in it as you please, as long as it's within the word limits or close (For the sake of said judge's time).

As far as publishing goes, I'd like you to have your stories on public display within the group. If you win, it could be submitted to the Onigiri with your permission. In this contest though, you control full copyright. If people are sufficiently scared of having their short-story stolen, I'll have it moved to just judge's eyes only. People generally aren't interested in stealing shorts though.

Can we turned in scripts we've made?

The idea is that you'll start now with fresh material, but it's not like i'll know. It'll just need the requirements to be met.

well id enter but im not all that great of a write so haha i guess you can leave me out of this

If you don't enter now, I'm going to kick your ass.

Hello Jorlwind! ^^ I have a question or two for you about your contest! [because I'd LOVE to participate!]

Would it be alright if I submitted an excerpt or perhaps the first chapter from a novel that I am writing?

[I ask because at the moment I have about 3 novels on the go, and about 7 more that I'm going to write & I'm not quite sure if I can squeeze any of them into a short story, so I was wondering if that would be acceptable, as I have a proboard in which I post all my writing [poetry, novels, journals and whatnot]

If you can make 1 chapter into a complete story, then fine.

What dose rule five mean? Chemistry?

Rule 5 - just insert two instances that make a reference to chemistry. Not that complicated. It helps prevent plagiarism.

questions questions questions..u probably get em alot..lol but anyways...first of all if i even join this contest...when i'm finished with my story can i just PM u my short story

I'm starting to feel obligated to say that while you can PM me the entries, I can't keep them private =x this is because then if you won, it would seem like I was giving out to a "phantom" writer, not to mention that it ruins the community spirit this contest is trying to inspire. Just remember, few people ever publish short-stories for money, so their is little reason for your stuff to be stolen.

From: bmoney
I can just send in 5 short poems, instead of one long one

I'm already cutting it with allowing poems in the first place, so no. I want a long poem, not a bunch you cobbled together.

just wondering where i send the short story/peom for the contest!

I've been getting a lot of questions that are a bit annoying in the sense that its all in the first post. ALL of it. To remind, entries can either be PMed to me with a download link to the file, or you can create your own topic in the guild and post it there. Its all good.

I believe you add them throughout your story...it would be difficult to add them when you submit it...why don't you ask a Mod to make sure because it would be frustrating for you if you had to change your story later on...

^ in 12 point font, it works out to about 250 words a page. Which is normal. The wordcount is what you should be going by.

darksage29 wrote:

I am going to say this one last time - stop being lazy, and read the ENTIRE page. Just do it, it's in PLAIN LETTERING.

RULE 7: " You can either submit your story as a PMed doc-download link, or a separate topic in the group that will host this contest (The CR Society of Folklore and Story). Just PM a link. For uploading, I really like http://www.mediafire.com/. I'll take .doc format, .odt format, RTF format and PDF formatted files only. Remember, even if you submit by download link, your work will be put on display in a topic. It's public."

I'm getting enormously frustrated with this question, it's pretty plainly written.
