That's what worked for me. It's hard to spend a lot when other people are making the purchase.

Alternatively, become addicted to some inane RPG-style game where you devote your life toward saving up money for imaginary equipment. If you actually start to want the imaginary things more than you want real things...you'll be 'cured'.

Do they use credit cards? One could reduce the urge to spend by placing their cards in a tupperware container and freezing them in a block of ice. Then the cards will be intact in case of a financial emergency, but it also probably won't be worth it to open up every time they want to go to the store.

pay someone to beat you senseless. let them threaten you out of your addiction, let them cause your pain and make you suffer the most horrible punishments for you to see past your consumption of welfare & healthcare money.

Make a very detailed budget/money list (basically you write out what you bought and how much you spent on it) If that doesn't stop you from being a shopaholic then limit your spending.

Uhm well before you actually purchase an item think, "Do I really Need this..?Is it an essential thing to have..? If not then why am I buying it now..?" , or you could just put all of your money in a bank or a safe and make a rule for yourself, or ask someone close to help you out and make sure that you follow the rules, like you can only get 20 bucks every two weeks, no more, no less, this might make you start a habit of saving up, cause you would most likely see that this one item which might cost a bit more is of much more importance than this one other item, and you would start saving up more, which is a good thing. Best of luck to you.

Think about how much labor you have to put in to pay for something. Say you make $15/hr and want to buy a new iPod touch 32gig which is about $300. Think about whether or not that 20 hrs of hard labor is worth it.
