That suuuuuuuucks... I disagree with fining the end users like this, and I think anime dvds are extremely overpriced. Minute for minute, it's pretty much the most expensive video entertainment you can buy, (at least in the US). I think we will continue to see it more and more though. Torrenting is not at all anonymous, and it's really hard for companies to sue the torrent providers, since they don't actually hold any of the files on their servers. So the end user is pretty much all they have. However I hate the propaganda campaign attempting to brand downloading as "stealing," or a "crime" which it is not. Copying is not "taking" anything from anyone. Sometimes copying intellectual property for your own use is completely legal. When it isn't its an "infringment," not a crime.

I don't think it's so simple as distribution companies just trying to rape people though. The artists and production companies need money to make anime, and if they can't count on dvd sales then they will have smaller budgets and produce lower quality art. Fining people is an extreme approach and I think companies will alienate some of their customers...people need that anime fix though, and they'll eventually come back like the junkies that they are and buy from their dealers. I wish distro companies would stop trying to fight internet activity and start tryign to use it--offering high quality streams or download services cheap enough to prevent their customers from feeling robbed.

At least the Japanese artists and owners have more loyalty to their consumers and allow fansubbing to continue. People in Singapore can still download fairly safely until their distributor licenses the product.
