Genres: I Generally like two different genres of anime.

Type1: Slice of life anime/Drama type anime. Generally has a bit (or a lot) of romance, and, for the most part, isn't overly violent. I perfer them to have some sort of plot, so please don't say something like K-ON or Lucky Stars.

Examples of type1: Clannad, Kanon, Angel Beats, Air, Myself Yourself, Toradora, Another(It stands out, but this is here because it doesn't really belong in the other type either), Ano Hana, Ano Natsu de Matteru, Kokoro Connect, and Welcome to the NHK.

Type 2: The darker, edgier, Seinen shows. I love shows full of dark plots, psychological battles and internal struggles. The kind of show that will have you on the edge of your seat, and not fail to surprise you.

Examples of type2: Darker than Black, Monster, Hellsing, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Code Geass, Death Note, Kaze no Stigma, Bleach, Shakugan no Shana, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Alive.

but on the lines of Ninja styled Justus' like "Naruto"?
Something on the serious note like "Claymore" (How death is permanent),
But has a playful tone at times like "DeathNote". (Death note had a good relief moments when things got far to intense)

The only thing that really fits your requirements 100% is Scrapped Princess. If you are willing to have adventure without the traveling long distances, Kaze no Stigma is a good choice, and if you are willing to sacrifice a little bit of seriousness, Excellworld is good.

Scrapped Princess is about a girl who was foretold to bring the apocalypse, so people wanted her dead. She got thrown in a gorge, but survived and was adopted by an old woman. But, later in life, the people who wanted her dead figure out she survived, so they send knights after her, and she must flea with her brother and sister, and find a way to prove her innocence. The animation isn't top notch, but it gets the job done, and the fighting is pretty good.

Kaze no Stigma is about a guy who was kicked out of his clan for being weak in fire magic, but finds he is very talented in wind magic, so years after his exile, returns to his home town to prove his worth.

Excellworld is basically Sword Art Online, but in a cyberpunk world(Like Neo-Tokeo or the Matrix if you have seen those). They are trapped in a videogame, and must survive in it if they wish to survive in the real world too. It was written by the same guy who did Sword Art Online.

Also, if you are willing to wait until the first season/story ark is over, Bleach might be a good fit too. You will know it is about to get good when they leave the human world, although in the interest of not spoiling anything, I wont tell you much more than that.
