This is definitely now in my favorites list, and you can be sure I'll be continuing on with X Bridge. I love that it's quirky and hilarious but in a way that also makes you think. In addition to the story and characters, I really like the animation style--something I also really loved in Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari (which are also both on the unenumerated "favorites" list in my head.) So, I'm thinking that it might be worthwhile seeking out another SHAFT production. What would you recommend? Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei has the same director as the monogatari series, and Ef ~ A Tale of Melodies is another really good SHAFT title. If you haven't already seen it, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is pretty highly regarded as well. Katanagatari is not SHAFT, but was written by Nisio Isin -- who wrote the monogatari series -- and it also has a fairly interesting visual style. Medaka Box was also written by Nisio Isin, but it doesn't really get good until Season 2, and Humanity has Declined is also one with cool visuals, and a focus on interesting dialogue. Thanks You might try Last Exile for a similar time period, Un-Go for a mystery show, Toradora or My Little Monster for a Cute Romance, and Boogiepop Phantom or Hell Girl might also fit what you're looking for. |

I'm not sure what's on the popular list, but I'll just give a few that I like from different genres that I don't think would be likely to show up there: Ef ~ A Tale of Melodies Humanity has Declined My Ordinary Life Gankutsuou Broken Blade |

I'll definitely try some of those out. I'm going to pass on Medaka Box though--I know you said it doesn't get good until Season 2, but I really didn't care for the first few episodes of Season 1 that I did watch, so I'm not very inclined to pick up in the middle or suffer through a bunch of episodes in hopes of improvement in the following season. Watched one episode of Humanity Has Declined--wasn't for me, and I actually did not like the visual style. Thanks again! |
