I don't know why you would want to watch a shounen with a wimpy MC, but here goes. Magi has Alibaba and Aladdin as the 2 main characters. Alibaba starts out kinda wimpy and then gets awesome as the show goes on. Plus, you also have a second season to look forward to.

If you don't specifically need a shounen fighter series, then there's Mirai Nikki (Future Diary on Hulu) and Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is one of my favorites, but it does have its haters. Don't look for spoilers

If you feel like watching it over a few weeks, Gurren Lagann is new on Crunchyroll, where the main character goes from wimpy to about the manliest dude ever. Episodes 4-6 are kinda weak, but the rest of the show is what makes it one of my favorites. Don't look for spoilers.

There's a chance you might have seen all of these (cause you've got more CR points than me lol), but if you haven't then I heartily recommend them all.

Thank you for your recommendation i will watch those animes

Can somebody recommend a show like "Welcome to the NHK" or "Tatami Galaxy"? Not (necessarily) a story about a lost 20 year old guy, but something with the same tone. Simultaneously funny and goofy, and mature and heartbreaking. I like their dark color palette, too. FYI, my two favorite anime are "FMA: Brotherhood" and "Toradora!". Thanks.

This is probably not what you're looking for continent-wise, but were I you, I'd just watch Louie or The Rules of the Game by Jean Renoir. Again, not anime, but I think tonally they're about dead-on.

Hell, I'd even watch The Third Man with Orson Welles. Suffice it to say, poignance of a darker hue is pretty well covered within a more Western media.

I think Kare Kano might surprisingly fit the bill - it's a high school romance, but it's exceptional vis-a-vis the rest of the crowd. Directed by Hideaki Anno of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Kazuya Tsurumaki of FLCL, it's surprisingly subjective and surrealist. There's as much character examination and poignance as there is romance and humor, although those things are intertwined into a continuous whole.

Maybe Honey and Clover? I dunno; I think one could reasonably define it by the adjectives you use, but boy is it different from Welcome to the NHK and Tatami Galaxy.

I'm not particularly partial to this show, but I often hear the protagonist from Tatami Galaxy compared to that of Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, and lord knows the latter revels in a moody palette. Personally, I found it to be little more than a self-referential, post-modern Harem, but to each his own.

Based off of Azumanga Diaoh, try Arakawa Under the Bridge, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru, or even Futakoi Alternative. The first is available on crunchyroll.

I'm in the mood for a romance (Yuri or not) that ends happily, with a splash of humor and (decently) rounded characterizations.

Tonally-similar shows that I like are Aoi Hana, Kare Kano, Princess Jellyfish, Honey and Clover, Kids on the Slope, Sasameki Koto, and Mysterious Girlfriend X.

Unlike basically any of those shows, however, I'd really like to watch a show that has a discreet happy ending.

Kare Kano should always be at the top of a list, as noted several times before.

You might enjoy Ef - A Tale of Memories. My understanding is that it's adapted from the same game company that did Clannad, but the production company is different. Now, I don't much care for Clannad, but I found Ef - A Tale of Memories to be a very interesting experience.

If you're willing to go heavier on the drama side, then Koi Kaze does a fantastic job at humanizing an incredibly disturbing situation.

While not as well-written as the above shows, Ano Natsu de Matteru is a competent romance.
