So far i've watched

Code Geass
Full metal alchemist
darker than black
cowboy beebop
sword art
attack on titan
death note
d gray man
fate/zero
elfien lied

and a few others, this is just to give you guys a general idea of what I enjoy. I'm looking for something a bit darker with interesting plot twists and thought provoking episodes, aswell as some action on top of that.

Fantasy is great but I also enjoy sci-fi

Blast of Tempest: For plenty of twists and turns, makes you think. And unbelievably suspensful.

Btooom!: Dark as in bloody and messed up, mostly for action purposes though.

I don't watch very many dark anime, Iv'e seen Elfen Lied though.

All of these have some philosophical or psychological bent to them.

I'd suggest checking out...

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Japan in 2030, after the Third World War. This is the first season of a story that follow the members of Section 9, an elite counter-terrorism team, as they protect Japan from a number of technological and criminal threats.

It's followed by S.A.C. 2nd GiG, the second season of the anime, and then two movies: Innocence and Solid State Society. The original Ghost in the Shell movie also great, but it doesn't fit perfectly into the chronology.

Ideally, the events during that movie should occur between S.A.C. 2nd GiG and Innocence.

This series is pretty heavy on philosophy (the movies especially).

Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
This is a movie set in an alternative history of Japan in the 1950s; it's a drama/thriller about what happens to a member of a paramilitary police force after a young suicide bomber detonates her explosives in front of him.

There are layers to this, and it leads up to a very challenging conclusion.

Monster
This is a long series, and it's not all action all the time. But it's one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever seen. It's about a brilliant Japanese surgeon in Germany who saves a child's life, but it turns out the kid's a bit of a... monster.

The series follows their intertwined lives as the child continues growing up as a conscienceless killer.

Psycho-Pass
This is a crime horror piece. You get to explore the hidden underworld of a futuristic (but not too distant) utopia through the eyes of a young woman who joins the (significantly reduced) police force. Everything looks great, but it isn't.

This anime was written by Gen Urobuchi, who also wrote the story Fate/Zero was adapted from.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This might be hit or miss depending on your preferences, but it's also an original anime by Gen Urobuchi. It takes the magical girl genre and turns it into a fantastically morbid, M-rated psychological horror piece.

This story is traumatizing, but in a good way. If that makes any sense at all.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (or just Gurren Lagann)
This one is here on Crunchyroll. It's a seemingly light-hearted mecha series with quite a bit of humor and crazy elements in it. But when it gets dark it gets really dark. Good characters you're attached to die in this series.

But there's a lightness to it too, and the whole thing is brilliantly done.

If there was a competition for best anime ever made, this would at least be a serious contender.

Texhnolyze
This is an extremely dark story with two aims: the first is it replays the history of human existence through the protagonist. The second is it explores what's wrong with political theories when taken to extremes.

It's basically an exploration of human nature and how we imprison ourselves.

You could also look up...

Guilty Crown
It has many detractors, but it's an interesting series (and it's easier to watch now since the pacing issues aren't as severe, since you're not waiting a week for new episodes). It's basically a deconstruction of the mecha genre.

One of its strengths is the protagonist's character arc, he's put through a lot and changes dramatically.

It's not as well put together as the other titles on this list, but it's better than Code Geass, at least.

And finally, for actual fantasy...

Berserk
The anime series is pretty old and it shows, but it's being remade in a series of movies (two of which are available). This is basically Japan's Lord of the Rings, except it's pure dark fantasy. You can't make fantasy darker than this.

It's a landmark series, and Guts and Griffith are two of the most incredible characters in the history of anime/manga.

If you're also reading manga I strongly recommend Berserk's as well.

And before going, I have to mention...

Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion / Rebuild of Evangelion
NGE is about as psychologically twisted and morbid as you can get. There's a lot of psuedo-theology explaining what's happening, but the focus is purely psychological. The recent Rebuild movies retell and lighten the story a bit.

It's a very strong series and worth checking out; it's got its fair share of haters though.

Mostly because of the protagonist's (Shinji Ikari's) character.

That makes an even ten; good place to stop I think.

Summary:

Drama: Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.
Fantasy: Berserk, Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Horror: Monster.
Mecha: Evangelion, Guilty Crown, Gurren Lagann.
Sci-fi/Crime: Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass.
Sci-fi/Existentialism: Texhnolyze.

That's fair. :)

I also thought of Hellsing / Hellsing Ultimate last night, but I don't think they're very thought-provoking, really.

Shin Sekai Yori
This is an interesting show. It had a few hiccups in the second half of the season, but overall it was one of the more intriguing shows from 2012. It occurs 1000 years after humans gain the power of telekinesis.

Which promptly ripped our modern world to pieces.

Saki grows up in a village which has learned to live with the inherent destructive power within each of their community, but at great cost. Which you'll learn more about as the story progresses.

This anime had some exceptional strengths (I think episode 10 was the best episode of any anime I saw last year, period), but it floundered a bit towards the end. It had trouble committing to its basic theme.

Still though, it tackles a ton of questions. Like humanity being a destructive parasite to the world around us, racism, studying a social order built on fear, valuing human life in other human lives, etc.

I'd actually call it a horror series, although not in the jump-scare kind of way.

Just in the creeping dread and sense of wrongness.

And just for the record...

Hellsing / Hellsing Ultimate

The Bird of Hermes Is My Name,
Eating My Wings To Make Me Tame

This is a series (recently remade as a series of 10 OVAs called Hellsing Ultimate) about modern-day vampires and the secret societies from the English Protestant and Roman Catholic churches that hunt them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hellsing, although some people might not like the older looking animation. Hellsing Ultimate though is a brilliant piece of modern vampire horror. They hold nothing back in this show.

Not really much philosophy going on here, just a really dark horror show that's fun to watch.

So that adds two more to the horror category:

Drama: Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.
Fantasy: Berserk, Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Horror: Hellsing / Hellsing Ultimate, Monster, Shin Sekai Yori.
Mecha: Evangelion, Guilty Crown, Gurren Lagann.
Sci-fi/Crime: Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass.
Sci-fi/Existentialism: Texhnolyze.

Have you tried Texhnolyze?

I assume you've already watched everything that's Ghost in the Shell.
