So Attack on Titan convinced me to make an account on crunchyroll and I'm really eager to find more anime I enjoy. I'm rather new to anime so any help is appreciated. Anime I have seen and really enjoyed:

Deathnote
Attack on Titan
Full Metal Alchemist
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Akira
Ghost in Shell

I really like anime that gets at the nature of humanity. Deathnote is an exploration of megalomania. Attack on Titan shows humanity full of dread and hopelessness and pushed to the brink. Full Metal Alchemist weighs the value of technological progress against life. Gargantia was a comment on the values and dangers of collectivism. I like sociology in my anime, and I like anime that makes me think. What anime have you all seen that made you think, or looked at humanity in a deep meaningful way?

You should look into shows that are written by Gen Urobuchi (who wrote Gargantia):
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Psycho-Pass
(on Hulu)
Fate/Zero
Urobuchi loves talking about the nature of humanity, though I usually think the things he has to say are a bit irrelevant outside of the context of each of the stories' respective universe, except for Psycho-Pass. He was pretty good about that in that show.

There's also Shin Sekai Yori, which is about 5 kids uncovering the dark secrets of their society as they enter and go through adolescence. You could write more than a few essays on the sociology explored in that show.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a pretty angsty show, but I think it says a lot and says it in the right way. The ending hit me pretty hard, plus it's a classic that you should watch anyway. I think the problem with most psychological animes is that they like to talk about "humanity," rather than "humans." Evangelion doesn't do that. Instead of characters that represent an aspect of humanity, you find a bunch of characters who are all their own person. This is what makes it far more relateable than any other psychological show I've seen so far, and why it's more effective. But anyway, I could go on forever :3

Also, if you want more of an actiony psychological show, you can try Mirai Nikki (Future Diary), which is on Hulu. It doesn't get too deep, and I still want to punch the MC in the face, but it's got a great cast of side-characters and a really good sense of momentum (plus everyone's favorite psycho girlfriend!). It's a very cool show.

The perfect triumvirate for that set of thematic interests consists of Texhnolyze, Haibane Renmei, and Serial Experiments Lain. They were all made by the same group of people, and tackle different aspects of the human condition. Ya may get a kick out of them.
