Pokemon have explicitly been defined as different species, games or otherwise. And to deny the fact they eat each other would be to ignore tons of Pokedex entries. The anime doesn't trump the games. They're wild animals, they clearly eat each other.

Surely all pokemon are not herbivorous, right? They have to eat other pokemon to live.

Oh I would imagine there is definitely some poke-eating going on. Look at Charizard, you can't tell me he is a herbivore. As for the trainers eating pokemon, I imagine certain pokemon are quite tasty.

I will admit, I have thought of that in the past.
It would explain where they get their burgers from.
It could explain why Fardfetch are nearly extinct (probably because they taste so nice).
This is intriguing, I must think more on this subject....

Indeed they do, and in the original concept for Pokemon, this was supposed to be a theme that was explored more than it is today. Taillow's Pokédex entry in Sapphire Version claims that Taillow feed on Wurmple. "Taillow is young - it has only just left its nest. As a result, it sometimes becomes lonesome and cries at night. This Pokémon feeds on Wurmple that live in forests." And if I recall correctly, Meowth once tried to eat a Magikarp, only to have his teeth broken due to the Magikarp's rather tough scales.

Pokemon is very much no different than creatures in the real world. There are speices that get eaten by other species. For example a certain bird pokemon eat a certain bug pokemon and/or feeds it to it's chicks. So it's pretty much it's version of nature taking course.

And I'm also sure that people eat certain types of pokemon as normal as we eat chicken or beef.

Also, Chansey eggs are 'nutritious and delicious' according to various Pokedex entries.

If you had played Pokemon Platinum thoroughly, you would have realised that humans eat pokemon.

In the library at one of the towns (i forget the name, but it was where you caught a ferry), it said that there was a man in the ancient past that went around and destroyed the balance of nature, killing lots of pokemon but not even eating them - wasting them.

If humans eat pokemon, i'm pretty sure that pokemon will eat other pokemon too.

EDIT: Will add the text as soon as I find my Platinum cartridge.

Also, the anime was obviously toned down for a younger audience. When I read that text in the library, it was pretty... unsuitable for younger audiences.

This was in a real episode of Pokemon, I kid you not. Apologises for the terrible quality.
Though SkylarkAnime's points hold true as well, I recall in the anime that they ate real animals, such as beef and veal as well. Therefore, I conclude that in Pokemon, people eat both pokemon and animals.

Okay. In the Canalave library, in all Sinnoh region games, on the top floor, you can read two books. These I have typed out for you underneath.

_______________________________________________________

Sinnoh Region's Mythology

Long ago, when Sinnoh had just been made, Pokemon and humans led seperate lives. That is not to say they did not help each other. No, indeed they did. They supplied each other with goods, and supported each other. A pokemon proposed to the others to always be ready to help humans. It asked that Pokemon be ready to appear before humans always. Thus, to this day, Pokemon appear to us if we venture into tall grass.
_______________________________________________________

This says that they supplied each other with goods, which probably meant meat, milk, eggs, things like that.

Veilstone's Myth

A young man, callow and foolish in innocence, came to own a sword. With it, he smote Pokemon, which gave substinence, with carefree abandon. Those not taken as food, he discarded with no afterthought. The following year, no Pokemon appeared. Larders grew bare.

The young man, seeking the missing Pokemon, journeyed afar. Long did he search. And far and wide too, until one he did find. Asked he, "Why do you hide?" To which the Pokemon replied... "If you bear your sword to bring harm upon us, with claws and fangs, we will exact a toll. From your kind we will take our toll, for it must be done. Done it must be to guard ourselves and for it, I apologize.

To the skies, the young man shouted his dismay. "In having found the sword, I have lost so much. Gorged with power, I grew blind to the Pokemon being alive. I will never fall savage again. This sword I denounce and forsake. I plead for forgiveness, for I was but a fool." So saying, the young man hurled the sword to the ground, snapping it. Seeing this, the Pokemon disappeared to a place beyond seeing...

As it said, Humans ate Pokemon.Well, pretty much only the first paragraph, but it's interesting, so I copied it anyway. Keywords - Substenance, food and larders.

As a reply to FalseFallacy's comment, there was a brillian interpretation of Pokemon's anime series, found in the site below. It talks about how Pokemon the anime has changed over the years and why you never see anything related to the real world in it anymore. AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL. And no, I am not an /a/ lurker. I found these through other sources.

www.soompi.com/forums/topic/261135-pokemon-interpretation/

Finally, because Long post is looooooooooong, there are more comparisons to other series in spoiler... But they have nothing to do with the topic at hand.
