I know this may seem like a trolling type of question, but I've watched much anime over > 10 years and I TRULY do want to know something.

Why is so much Japanese anime full of 14 year old kids. Furthermore, why are these usually whiny and girl fearing, boys?

As an American who's never been to Japan, is it just me, but it bugs me to no end not understanding why this is an extremely pervasive precept of so many shows I've seen.

Thanks.

Well, anime nowadays seems to target the younger audience, so it would make more sense to also have a young protagonist since it would be alot easier for a teen to relate to rather than let's say a character who's in the 40's. Also, it's probably influenced by the culture, since Japanese people seem to be pretty into cute stuff. I haven't been to Japan myself, so don't take my word for it.

one it's otaku pandering, two don't base anime off for the Japanese people total. That would be saying that Jerry springer or family guy represents us. Three it depends on the situation at hand or how the characters look in my opinion despite being "14" most look as if they are over the age of 18 if not 20 or older. Four the whole fear of mean is just another cheap fetishism, hell I am afraid to talk to woman in real life, but online is another story. If you want to watch a anime that has strong female characters as the lead go with aria or rail-gun, hell dance in the vampire bund has a wonderful female lead that can kick anyone's ass. okay that's all I have to say on it, talk to miska 10032 if your still having problems

Because of young people's indecisiveness given their instability. If you had bold characters like Ginko all the time most anime would end at episode 1.

Plenty of anime shows with characters older than 14, but that age is generally what would be the most popular - as I believe with good reason kids/teenagers watch more anime than adults (regular adults...). It can easily become less interesting for younger people if the main character is way older than themselves.

Examples of anime with a protagonists older than '14' would be:

Steins;Gate (I love the main character, he is so .. *alive* - 17 but still~), Black Lagoon, Ghost in the Shell, Spice & Wolf, Ergo Proxy, Golden Boy, Hellsing, Paprika, Planetes, Samurai Champloo, Speed Grapher, Trigun, Great Teacher Onizuka, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Witch Hunter Robin... Just to mention a few.

Most of the time the protagonist is between 12 and 16, but sometimes they'll be more in the 18-20 age range. That's about as old as they get though. You have to consider that the target audience is that young, and that many of the older people that watch anime are refusing to grow the fuck up in one way or another, and others enjoy the nostalgia of remembering what it was like to be that age, so it's most effective for the creators to keep the protagonists young.

it would make it boring that way, the point is trying to relate to the kids and see their lives, i think ore no imouto and tenchi muyo did this okay showing off the parents/grand parents but you also have to remember, this is true kids or young teens in japan grow up a lot faster than kids here. Most parents work 10-12 hour shifts making most kids forcibly have to grow up in order to survive, or from the chats and people I have talked to personally in japan. Hmm that's all I can really add with out going off subject

Well most anime(s) are meant for kids anyway, it would be so much easier for them to relate if the main characters were consisting of kids or teenagers.
