Synopsis

Third season of Natsume Yuujinchou. Since he was young, a teenage boy named Natsume Takashi has been able to see spirits, but keeping this ability a secret has now become a heavy burden for him and has made his life difficult.

This begins to change when Takashi inherits his grandmother's "Book of Friends". He discovers that she, Natsume Reiko, shared the same ability as him and starts to understand why he was always targeted by both good and bad spirits.

After learning the true meaning behind the Book of Friends, which allows him to manipulate the spirits listed within its pages, Takashi undertakes a journey with his bodyguard, the infamous spirit Madara, to free the spirits of their contracts with Reiko.

Main characters

Takashi Natsume. Natsume Takashi, the main character of the story, is born on July 1st. Natsume is 15 years old, and like his grandmother, Natsume Reiko, he has the ability to see spirits. He has inherited the Book of Friends, a book of youkai (spirit) names that no one but Reiko, Natsume, and other spirits can read. Because of Natsume's strong resemblance to his grandmother Reiko, he is often mistaken for her, causing spirits who hate Reiko to chase him constantly. He decided to dissolve the book by giving all the names back to their owners. He is accompanied by the spirit Madara, nicknamed "Cat" because of the spirit's appearance. Natsume promised that to pass the book on to Cat when he dies, if the cat serves as his bodyguard until then.

Madara. Madara is a powerful spirit, who protects Natsume from others and teaches him spells on occasion, in return for Natsume's promise to give him the Book of Friends when he dies. They often fight each other, which leads to Natsume punching Madara on the face and knocking him out. Despite his protests of not being a cat, he likes to play with cat toys. Nyanko's design is based on a lucky cat statue Midorikawa was given as a child. In the anime, Natsume is more respectful to Madara.

Reiko Natsume. Natsume's grandmother, from whom he inherited the ability to see spirits. When Reiko was young, she was considered a freak by everyone else because of her ability. Since she believed no human could ever understand her, she turned to the spirits for companionship. Reiko's power was extraordinarily powerful, and so she bullied spirits in to obeying her by playing games with them. If they lost, she would make them give her their names. Reiko gathered the names in to the Book of Friends, and commanded most spirits, except for Madara, who beat her in a game. Reiko died when she was young, so no one remembered her.

How I've missed Natsume Yuujinchou. First episode was good as usual. The pacing was slow but I can't complain, it was very calming to watch and that's one of the things I liked about Natsume Yuujinchou. This is an absolute contender for my top 3 this season!

You can't expect much to change in this season and I think that's a good thing. The animation still looks great. It's good to hear the awesome music by Yoshimori Makoto too.

The only critique I have is that the pacing of the story was a bit forced. It seemed like they were just throwing stuff at you. The story itself was fine but the execution was a bit lacking.

More people need to be watching this show.
All the slice of life and slow paced atmosphere anime these days are focused upon moe little girls. Not Natsume Yujin-chou. We have a whimsical protagonist, a drunk cat and a load of monsters that look like they came out of a Ghibli film. And still, it succeeds.
The episode was classic Yujinchou.

It always was a beautiful anime, and now it still is.
It's definitely gives the warm-in-your-heart-or-cry-for-indefinite-reason feeling when you watch it.
Plus I love Kamiya Hiroshi's voice. <3

Kamiya Hiroshi ftw!

well i expect more development in the third season (although... i dunno what kind of development it would be)
this is too good to be a Shoujo manga adaptation.
i see the soundtracks by Yoshimori r the same as always, i hoped for more new bgm.

the 'calming' thing is always its #1 part of this anime since the first season.

From the opening and end credits I was kinda sad that they didnt have the guy with the salamander yokai and the three that help him out, so it makes me hope that guy will be in it.

The focus of this season seems to be going away from the spirits and more on the development of Natsume's character. For this reason, we aren't really seeing much focus on the book of friends, so the "warm and fuzzy ah-that's-what-happened" kinda feeling we get in the previous seasons aren't as evident here.

Still, I'm enjoying the character development going on. I wouldn't say it's one of the better season of this franchise, but it's still a nice show to watch.

This third season is definitley focusing on Natsume, his background ,his relationship with his Aunt and uncle that is becoming more of a son and parents . his classmates , and his friends . Natsume is changing to a less timid person. He is becoming comfortable of what he is .

I noticed those subtle attitude changes in Kamiya san delivery of Natsume's lines.

Since Natsume itself seem to be the main theme of this season, I have a feeling that they are setting it up for the end of the series because we all know that the end of this series is going to focus more
on Nastume and NyanKo sensei and we all know why.

So I dont think this series is inferior to the second at all. Each series has a story to tell.

However, I wonder when they will conclude this series.

We shall wait and see.
