The SHAFT style adapted by Shinbo is derived from Kunihiko Ikuhara's work on Revolutionary Girl Utena back in the late 90's. And this is Kunihiko Ikuhara's return to the creation and direction of an original series.

Utena doesn't have crazy head-tilts like SHAFT shows, but it's filled to the brim with symbolism and "not-so-symbolism" and "are you sure that's symbolism i'm sure the director's just trying to mess with you".

Er... Are you supporting my statement that it is like SHAFT shows, or saying I'm wrong. Your first and second paragraphs aren't too clear... Either way, I do understand what you mean.

But let's put it this way. "When something surpasses the original, it becomes the original."

Just read your comment again, and I think I understand what you mean. I don't just mean the symbolism and head tilts that are in most of SHAFT's works, when I talk about SHAFT's style. I also mean the darker drawing style, character drawing style, etc.

Personally, I think that Mawaru could be weirder and better if SHAFT took it. There's a lot of points where the art style is really disappointing for me, but that's just my own opinion. There's also a lot of points where it could have been "weirder" or that things could have been brought out more.

And yes, I agree with the commenta few comments above. The transformation thing felt realy out of place and weird.

After this is my own opinion/speculation, but...

Part of Akiyuki Shinbo's style came to be because of SHAFT's lack of budget. Black screens, random walls of text, pictures of real things, still pictures - Stuff like that wasn't all intentional, he just had to adapt because SHAFT didn't have enough budget. You can see this a lot in Bakemono and Zetsubou.

They ended up creating Madoka very smoothly (no random black screens and still, etc.), because of profits from DVD sales of Bakemonogatari, but he still stuck with his style.

Although I did like his older, smaller budget series better... (i.e. Sayonara and Bakemono > Arakawa and Denpa Onna)

I was mainly pointing out that it's not Brain's Base trying to be SHAFT, but the director who influenced the styles - much like how Shinbo is the main director on the majority of SHAFT shows and has created the so called "shaft style" (I can't think of a shaft show not done by him).

One of the things Shinbo is really good at is making "talking heads" interesting. I noticed it in Bakemonogatari where the majority of the content was just two characters throwing dialogue at each other, he manages to work something boring and turn it into something really entertaining with odd camera angles, it did help that the dialogue and voice-actors themselves in Bakemonogatari where pretty damn good too but anyway..

I'm not sure if you've noticed but there is clearly a large budget in this, funded by Brains Base who for some wierd reason is doing this along with 2 other shows this season (Kamisama Dolls and Natsume S3) now if you've seen Kamisama Dolls then you'll see that the animation is subpar and I can't comment on Natsume since I haven't seen it - but it seems that most of the budget is being poured into this. So This should be capable of emulating Ikuhara's work on Utena only with flashier animation and over 10 years of brainstorming time, where he decided to think about penguins.. clearly..

I do think that Shinbo has created his style and that it is different from Ikuhara's but i'm saying it took alot of influence from Ikuhara's work on Utena and Sailor Moon. Sorry if that was misconstrued.

Hmmm so I was right when I watched the 'survival Strategy!!' transformation sequence and thought "damn that is SO Utena like"

Going on that theme: Utena had a light and frothy art style that was in contrast to it's darker moments. I think that made those moments more powerful.

I see, I see.

Ranting about SHAFT now, so skip ahead if you don't want to read it... -___-

Yes, Shinbo has done pretty much, if not all of SHAFT's shows, and yes, he is one of the most influential in creating the "SHAFT" style. I do agree on this point. But I also think that the SHAFT style is not only about the director. The drawings, backgrounds, characters, etc. are (well, were), done with a minimal budget, but somehow, especially in Bakemono (in my opinion), the drawings etc. were much more well done then some of the anime with much bigger budgets.

I also like SHAFT's animating style. Some of the scenes are just so smoothly made that it's captivating. When they have money to put into it, it just gets animated beautifully. An example is... Arakawa 2nd season, 1st ep, just after the mayor starts sprinting. Can't name any clearer ones right now... I dunno why I remembered that...

Mawaru's character art style just annoys me, but ag ain, that's just my own opinion. I just don't like those type of drawings... Especially of characters of no importance to the story, e.g. Boy looking at penguins 1st ep. I'm totally fine with people with no face though.

I can see that most of their budget is poured into Mawaru. I also watched Kamisama Dolls (although only the first ep), though I haven't watched Natsume yet (cos I haven't watched first two seasons... getting around to it). But it just feels like the staff aren't doing as great a job as they could have. Like I said above, SHAFT's animators and drawers somehow create very good quality drawings and animation etc. even with no budget. Is it just that they love creating anime, or are they just talented... Just my own opinion.

And I just realised we went really off topic. I can see what you mean about Shinbo's style taking influence from Itsuka's, but I can't exactly understand, because I haven't watched Utena. But it sounds good, so I'll probably watch it... Some time...

Just another question, did Shinbo actually work on Utena? As a staff member.

Akiyuki Shinbo didn't actually start working with SHAFT until 2004 with Tsukiyomi: Moon Phase. Anything before then was Shinbo-less. Even after that point, it appears he didn't do any work on He Is My Master (a joint with Gainax) or the 2007 Kino no Tabi movie (which was handled the TV series' director).

And to SkylarkAnime: No, Shinbo had no involvement in Utena.
