In recent anime that takes place in modern time, character carry around a folding cellphone. In To Aru Index, Misaka wields a phone with a frog keychain. Many other anime are like that, having a cellphone for the sake of flashing their anime mascot.

I do have to admit that other anime do take place in non-urban places and older ages like in Hanasaku Iroha. However, there are still anime with folding cellphones and phones with cords.

So, agree or disagree if cellphones have change and will change in anime. Also, give an explanation for your opinion.

I think cellphones in anime haven't changed for the main purpose to flash anime mascots. I hope that anime cellphones will change because technology changes everyday, so should anime.

Edit: When i mean change, I mean making cellphones into a smartphone.

What I want to know, is why the guys always have pink cellphones in anime.... But yeah, all Japanese people seem to have the same phones. I noticed this while watching Elfen Lied, Full Metal Panic and Rosario + Vampire. All the main characters have the same phone exactly. XD

It can depend on how essential cell phones are to the plot. If they're simply there to show that people are in a modern setting, then there's no real need to make them particularly different.

Some series though, like Durarara!!, do show some variation if the phones are more essential to the plot (which, in this example, they most certainly are).

Aside from what entropiCCycles said, old cellphones are much more easier to draw.

Those are standard phones in Japan for teenagers. They care more about practicality than shiny touch screens, and they also like to dress up their phones with stickers or other accessories, something you can't really do with smart phones. Just look at the many anime where the girls often have "Cute" keychain things on their phones.

Businessmen and older people are typically the ones who get smart phones in Japan

That pretty much explains it all. I think flip-phones are popular in the U.S. among high-schoolers too. They're cheap and generally pretty durable. Not to mention when you're that age flip phones seem cooler than they really are.

About fucking time an anime character ditches the flip phone and gets an Android. Perfect for watching Hetalias on YT.

I always imagined smartphones weren't particularly popular in Japan, since a lot of the clamshell models contain functionality that isn't available in comparable North American phone models, like watching television (read: Mari's phone from Tokyo Magnitude 8.0).

Clam-shell phones are very popular in Japan, and many people I know prefer it over candy bar phones. With the recent "explosion" of the iPhone, I'm seeing more people here with it... but still, lots of people here still prefer clamshells.

If I'm not mistaken, it's also a trend in Taiwan and Korea. One of the reasons Nokia wasn't able to penetrate into these Eastern markets in the early half of the past decade was because they were too keen on sticking to their candy bar designs.

Plus, you gotta admit that flipping open a phone like that has much more dramatic effect than just placing it to your ear. This is a show we're talking about - we need some sort of dramatic effect.
