His name is first mentioned in a fragment of his contemporary, Hesiodos (whose home of Askra is near modern Thivai, the modern Greek name of the ancient Greek city of Thebes. Thebes was the city where Herakles was born and other famous tales there include those of Oidipous and Dionysos).

Just because his name can translate as "blind" in ancient Greek doesn't necessarily mean he was.

The question whether or not he was real stems from the fact that the Odyssey and Iliad were re-told over and over with great changes. But then again, modern authors similarly go through different drafts/revisions before they get a book published. If we are going to assume the name "Homeros" was actually a group of people, I'd argue the same for Shakespeare and other literary greats (I'm leaving the Bible authorship out since that is already known to have various authors)

To be technical, the earliest known time that the Homeric works were "written" during the 6th century B.C. by Athenian tyrant Peisistratos. Homeros composed it verbally. Strange thing is while his dating from 1000-700 B.C. was during a time when stories were verbally told, the ancients before him like the Mykenaians and Minoans have had writings dating back long before the Trojan War (the usual dating is the 1200s-1100s B.C.)

As far as why I think he was real is just because I feel that there could have been an individual who composed the earliest known pieces of Western literature. To compare, Helen Keller was a blind/deaf but she did extraordinary things. Also, just because we can't necessarily prove the existence of someone doesn't mean they were fictional.

So what? Regardless of whether he is real or not, it's his work that really matter.
