I'm a closet otaku. I used to be open about anime and manga, but then everyone a school started to make fun of me for it so now I am a closet otaku.

Just as the title says, are you open about your interests in anime/manga, or do you keep it hidden from other people who might look down about your hobby? After watching the first few episodes of Oreimo last night (which also deals with the same subject), I was pretty curious about other anime fans' stance on this issue. From watching Lucky Star and Oreimo, it seems that the general public in Japan also kind of look down upon anime-obsessed otaku. Personally, I would say that I'm a bit in-between. I do share my interests of anime with my close friends, and occasionally, my family---but, I'm kind of quiet about my hobby, and I don't really fit-in with the majority of the outspoken anime fans who are members of an Anime Club at their school or town.

you know an otaku doesn't always refer to someone with an interest in anime.

Yes, I know there are other types of otaku in Japan like the idol otaku, the military nerd, the computer geek, etc....but I'm pretty sure that in the US, the term is implied to the major anime fans.

I'm very open about it, I wear a bunch of shirts/accesories of anime in public, I carry around a sketchpad full of anime(also games) drawings, and I'm usually reading Manga and playing games in public. I don't care what people think, I don't even talk about it unless people are interested and get me into conversation about it.

I say people should be open about their hobbies, nothing wrong with it. Unless it's hentai or something, although there are people out there that are proud of their hentai, still, power to them.

I can't tell if this is an innuendo for masturbation or not. I clearly am no fisherman.

I'm an open OTAKU, why would I be ashamed of that?
Almost everyone in my class is an OTAKU so i don't have any problems with them, and vice versa.

You're Filippino? I'm half-Filippino myself, and I have a bunch of family living in the Philippines too. I visited the Philippines last summer, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that anime is pretty popular there too! Some of my female cousins are really into anime, as well.

open type,i even play anime soundtrack/theme,sing with it even at my working place, all my colleague even my boss knew it and they sort of get pull into it,
there is some people who look down on my as well saying i still think like a kids or some sh!t,but i still go do my work professionally . actually for me this kind of hobby is the same as reading a book or watching a movie, concentrating on the story line,or character progress, and sometime make your brain more active.the only thing is,most of the girl in my place hate this,so i m kinda aloneT_T,its not that i dont have friends but all of them is 'gentlemen'...
