The beauty of being an otaku when you're older is you don't care what anyone thinks about that. At this in your life you are past trying to impress anyone or subconsciously seek the approval or admiration of your peers. A lot of them may already be dead, dying, suffering from cancer, have Alzheimer's, have way too many problems in their own lives to take the time to go out of their way to be .0005% concerned about whether anime, manga, plushies, dvds of animation from Japan, Korean, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, etc. adversely affects your very own psyche.

I wear otaku type t-shirts to family events. One bedroom closet is cram jammed with dvds (Thank you, Rightstuf), action figurines (mainly clothed girls playing guitars plus 1 Godzilla idol), and some selected bits of manga from Japan direct. My wife, God bless her, tolerates it though she wishes I'd grow out of this and choose something blander (and cheaper) so I can blend right in with the rest of the middle-aged conformists. My relatives just view this as a fad or altruistic psychosis, nod their heads in a sly way, and wish my wife all the best trying to find the right consistency brick to pitch toward my cranium to undo this aspect of me being me.

Quoting the post above written by a teenager: "It's all good." Folks, it really is! Those that matter don't mind; those that mind don't matter.

Revived......

I'm a closet most of the time except to a single friend of mind who shares the same interest

Ah..well this depends. With my friends (who are also otakus) I am very open to it. Its not like I flaunt it around or I'm wanting to hide it, I am an otaku and proud!

Anyone who isn't Japanese who says that they are an Otaku is a weeaboo. If you're American or from anywhere else in the world...you're just an anime nerd. Honestly...next, some white girl will start saying "KAWAII DESU" in the forum. Then I know it'll be time to stop visiting this site.

I don't really care who knows what I like so I guess I'm open? But I don't like talking about it coz how other people say names is awkward to me.
I mean, I'll watch anime with my friends and we'll sometimes just hang out and read manga but thats it. We don't really discuss it .-.

I... go to work wearing anime shirts. And I've had conversations with some students on the bus about various anime and manga. So you tell me...

I got a boring job so I watch anime/movies 80% of the time, 10% work and 10% other. I think I'm closet, I don't want my boss to see me watching cartoons.

I'm open about it, but I don't like to call myself otaku, I like geek stuff whether it is from Japan or not, for example I don't read as much manga as I read american comics.
Besides, all of the people I've met in person who call themselves otakus are the kind of people that watch a series just because everyone else is watching it.

I tell people that I like some movies and some shows. I definitely don't tell people that I like anime because I don't.

Closet, I suppose. Whenever most people find out I watch anime and read manga, they say I don't look like one who does. Not sure how one is suppose to look though....

I grew up watching anime with my Dad and older brother so when I was younger I was very open. Then one day in second or third grade I heard some popular kids talking trash about Naruto (My favorite show back then) and I got scared thinking no one would like me.(Peer Pressure FTW) It took me all the way up to seventh grade to actually open up a bit and it turns out my best friend likes anime as well. Now I have a big group of friend (about 9 or so) who either love anime or respect my liking to anime. I plan to be more open about it in high school since I have a fresh start.
