I have watched this show from the start, and although I keep watching it, I have been on the fence concerning whether or not do drop it. Nevertheless, all over this site is "I get blue balls waiting for the next Blue Exorcist!"

I don't see how this is much different than many many other shounen anime. For that matter, I don't see how the differences don't make it WORSE than other shounen anime. The overall premise for the story is cool, but I think the show altogether has a lot of worthless crap in it to fill up time, and the characters themselves don't seem particularly impressive to me either. Somehow, though, even guys seem to want to fuck Okumura Rin.

Anyway, I would really like someone to really think about it and tell me what about this show makes it so incredibly popular. Basically, no One Piece arguments. That would be something like "it's the best, because everything about it is the best." I really want someone to help me understand it's popularity in general, and not try to convince me that I should like it. Many of the younger users probably won't truly understand that, but I think there's enough of you my age or older that should be capable of this.

I like the demonology aspect, and the premise is cool. Though I don't see anything special about it either. It has a lot of used and over-used ideas in it, and the fillers are somewhat well hidden.

I think it may be a combination of 'fresher' ideas and popular ideas being used in conjunction. I don't know why Ao no exorcist is so popular either; I do watch it though.

Also, I don't think you'll find a convincing reason to watch it.

i would guess it's the premise that sucks in a certain type of viewer. there's nothing really nothing special about it, however. the story is forced and character development is non-existent.

lauriet is right: well-worn plot and character devices seem to drive this show more than anything else but the shows popularity would seem to justify exactly that sort of lowest common denominator approach.

I wouldn't nominate it for any awards, but a couple things I do appreciate about the series is the "demonology" undertone and the interactions between the two brothers.

That's what I wonder too. Hopefully in the future Ao No Exorcist won't be as or even more popular than Gintama, FullMetal Alchemist, One Piece, Fooly Cooly, Durarara, D.Gray Man, Cowboy Bebop, Haruhi, or Code Geass or I will be beyond pissed, as in my opinion, Ao No Exorcist is no where near as good as the anime I listed. Not that I hate the anime (I don't love it either), but it's nothing special to me, as I only watch it if I'm bored. Besides, it also reminds me of D.Gray Man and FullMetal Alchemist BIG time. It also has a LOT of elements from those anime, with the exception that the main character is the son of Satan, but we hear that everywhere (such as Beelzebub. Baby Beel is the son of the Great Demon King. Satan is also a Demon King, so there you go. Another fantastic example is Demon King Daimao). It's cool that the main character, Rin, become an Exorcist to defeat his own father, but he doesn't even do any exorcism. He just slice things with his burnt up sword, so I see no point lol.

Note: Most people are being biased and say the Ao No Exorcist is the BEST anime in 2011, because it has the most action, when all in all it is not , but that's people's opinions. Action is not the most important element in anime you know. Sometimes it's not need at all.

Its okay but I do think it copies a lot of things from other shounen animes. The fight scenes have at least been good in some of the recent episodes. So far it hasn't really drawn me into the story or the characters but it also hasn't made me want to stop watching either so I'm gonna stick with it.

Someone PLEASE Explain Why AnE Is So Popular
Because its a generic shounen anime with 90% of the male cast being bishounen characters with long slender limbs . Hell the water down anime version of Toriko is better.

The only thing remotely good about the series is the demonology aspect. Then again most anime today in my eyes are crap and/or stale.

grats your right about on thing. Action is over rated factor found in todays fads. That is why I am able to watch a anime like Touch, or PlanetS, Genshiken 40 times, Yet I am unable to even finish a mindless fad like Naruto, Gintama, or FullMetal Alchemist. I Will take substens over violence every time. Not saying that all action based anime is bad, after all I found Tiger and Bunny was good, do to taking A ideal like super hero's and giving it a more realistic out look from how American or Japanese corparations would take over, and use them to avertize there products.

Popularity doesn't mean it has to be listed in the greatest animes of all time. Ao no Exorcist has a genre mix that I really enjoy. It has action, comedy, drama, and supernatural. Two of my favorite shows are Natsume Yujincho and xxxHolic, which have the same genres (with less action). As time goes on, ideas for shows will and have been reused because there are so many shows out there and only so much that the public will actually watch. Rin is also a very likeable character. His personality draws people to him in the show and it can also do the same with a viewer. It really should be seen as a fun way to spend a Wednesday.

I don't care for the anime, it's the manga that I like. I only watched the anime to kill time and IMO it doesn't do it justice.

I'm happy to see that there are many others who feel exactly like I do about the show, although with only 2 posters attempting to explain it's popularity, I still don't have much more of an understanding of why it's so popular. I suppose the mangaka just tried to create it to be like other popular shows, perhaps without even knowing himself what specifically makes it popular. That's the feeling I get after reading over what everyone said.

I hear this a lot about various anime. I'm wondering, what is different about the manga that makes it better? It's fine if it's just for this show, but if you can explain why it happens with other anime too I would appreciate it.

Personally I rarely read manga at all. This is because 1) I prefer reading on paper, yet I rarely want to spend the money on actual manga, which cost 3 times as much as the original untranslated version does in Japan, and 2) because in some action scenes, with everything in black and white, I spend too much time trying to figure out wtf I'm looking at. Here's a prime example. . .

(If you watch Naruto this is indeed a bit of a spoiler.)

Well, I am totally going off on a tangent here. That's what I get for posting right after I wake up. Yes, I know how late it is. I'll just leave it at that.
