Changes to Region Lock

I've recently become Region Locked for almost all of the anime that I've been watching up to this point. Living in Japan, CR doesn't normally get the licenses for anime in that region, but near a military base I thought that I was in some exception zone or something. I've been living here for 2 years now and the first time I've come across this issue was while I was counting down the release of Bleach 331. Since then, I've tried troubleshooting what I can and even put in a ticket with hopes that someone from the CR helpdesk would be able to give me some good news. (Military in overseas has been able to work with some companies to get restrictions removed, such as Xbox Live features, Netflix, ect.)

So, my first question... around the time that the Bleach 331 episode came out to premium members, were there any changes to how the Region Lockouts were applied? or is there another reason why I would be perfectly fine one day and locked out the next?

Second question, since I wasn't able to get a hold of anyone with my ticket, is CR able to do anything for the military members that are shuffled around the world? or do I have to resort to scouring the internet for fansubs that, hopefully, are at least decent?

Lastly, (this one is open to anyone who knows the answer) I leave for Afghanistan in a little over a month, am I going to be able to view any videos on CR?

Thanks in advanced for any answers. It's just my luck that this happens right after I start checking out the new anime for this season.

Our Geo IP database was updated recently which causes our system to detect more accurate results for a given IP address.

Unfortunately we have no system in place for manually verifying a person's location and overriding restrictions. If you're on a military base and are supposed to be detected as being in the US, you may need to contact your base's network op/admin.

If you are going to Afghanistan on a US Military Base, you should not be restricted but it's possible that the same thing can happen where your IP address is improperly listed as not being from a US Military Base.

Unfortunately, the ISP I'm going through is Japanese owned rather than the one on base (more than $120/month for shitty DSL). So, it looks like I'll be going without for a while, but I will keep the account in hopes that I'll be able to use it in Afghanistan. If not, is it possible to put the premium membership on hold until I get back to the states... whenever that is?

I don't believe there is a way to put it on hold but that is a good question I hope a mod can answer. I know some sites do that but not sure if crunchyroll does that. Have you ever gotten your answer?

These might help. It's in the FAQs

How does the Membership Hold feature work?

By putting your Premium Membership on hold, you are canceling your current membership and losing any remaining days for your membership but you get Star Membership for free, up to 3 months, which keeps all of the social features active. This includes a colored star next to your username, customizable wallpapers for your profile page, the ability to embed music on your profile and 1000 bonus CR Points every month. When you Membership Hold expires, your Premium Membership subscription will automatically renew and you'll once again have the full benefits which come with that Premium Membership package, unless you cancel the Membership Hold..

I had not received an answer from a mod yet, but I had seen the Membership Hold feature on the FAQs while looking for why I was suddenly region locked. Unfortunately, I will definitely be deployed longer than 3 months. Also, I just checked my subscription and the next pay period starts in November. So I'll most likely loose at least half of October's days if I show up and find that I can't access CR for whatever reason and try to put it on hold. Then, if I read it correctly, the Membership Hold will end after 3 months and the Premium Membership will automatically be renewed.

While this may work for some people, it won't for me. I was hoping that even if it's not a common thing for CrunchyRoll to do, that they may have some government/military clause or exception somewhere. Some option other than just cancelling my membership completely.

I have teh same problem as you Zero. I'm currently in germany through the army. I was told in a briefing that there is a way if you get with your IT guy that you can get a legal document saying that you are in fact on U.S. soil, and with your IP address(if it is a static IP) you should be able to give it to the guys here so that they can add it an a list of exceptions to the blanket ip region block. that is what i was told when i asked this question at my inprocessing (i used hulu as an example so the others in the room would understand what i was getting at). Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but i am hopeful.

If you use the contact form, we can just refund your latest renewal purchase since you can't use our service right now.

Then you can sign back up when you are once again able to use it.

Ok, Thanks everyone. I leave to start my training back in the states next month, so right now it's really inconvenient and annoying but I'll just wait till then and hopefully get caught up with all my series. Then I'll find out about the internet situation when I show up in BFE Afghanistan. If it's not possible for me I'll have to take the option BasouKazuma gave.

Hopefully, I'll get lucky and I'll be cut off at a good stopping point. I know it'll drive me nuts if it's right before a big event, more so if I can see it's happening in the next episode from the previews.
