There are many reasons...I personally always considered 'puritanism' to have a big role in this kind of attitude towards things that are, well, diffferent.

Those who are not internet savvy or are in the popular crowd will see all cartoons as nerdy and for little kids, whether they be anime or not.

It's not just America. Whenever I mention anime to people I know, they immediately disassociate themselves with me. I think it's because it's 'from Asia', that makes it so unpopular here, since we're such a racist country. I don't expect a race of people that can't tell the difference between Japan and China, and think that because I've been to school in Japan, that I "must know kung fu" to tolerate programs that Japanese people watch.

You can't really generalize and say that the majority of the population has an aversion to anime, some might, but I think most just see it like any other "nerdy" hobby, even though anime is becoming more mainstream, just like comic books. Here's a spectrum of what I think how people perceive anime.

1. Super Otaku - self explanatory
2. anime fan - most of the people on crunchy roll, likes anime, not overly obsessed over it
3. closet anime fan - just like the anime fan except isn't open about it
4. the ambivalent - maybe watches some anime on adult swim or something, has friends who like anime, has some interest
5. the informed but uninterested - has a good idea what of anime is, has friends who like anime, but doesn't really like it much themselves
6. the misinformed - these are the ones that think anime is "just for kids" or thinks anime is all porn or something
7. the completely ignorant - self explanatory
8. super haters - possibly religious fundamentalists, bigots or people who just hate anime for whatever reason

It would be interesting if someone did a study or something on people's attitudes towards anime. My conjecture would be that the younger crowds would fall more in the 2 - 4 categories while the older people fall under the 5-7 category... 1 and 8 are sort of the extremes and there are probably very few people who fall into those.

Well, think about it, how often does the average American encounter anime? Unless one intentionally seeks anime, the answer is not often. It's a pretty reasonable reaction for Americans to misunderstand what anime is, no?

I think it's because it's different, and I know that along time ago, and I try to fight with myself about this even today, is to not be ashamed of your interests. As well as not put anyone down for theirs. I think people generally (of course not all) like to stick with something familliar to them as opposed to different.

tell me about it, I was talking to my friend about anime ONCE and she told me I want to be japanese ..... wtf?

:O what's wrong with that? Yesterday I went to a restaurant named Shinsengumi. The workers there were all super loud, like whenever anyone was being seated or whenever someone would leave they'd yell, ARIGATO GOZAIMASU! And a whole bunch of other stuff I wish I understood lol. Eating my amazing ramen thinking, "I could live in a place like this".

I'm totally moving to Japan.

But anyway, I was shocked to find out (keep in mind I'm the youngest at my work & I've been working there for 5 years now) that 3 co-workers watch Anime as well. 1 of them frequents this site as much as I do. Though we have slightly different tastes. It's as most have been saying. You can't say that all of America feels that way just because of a couple friends.

Partially because the only anime they (the mundanes) may have seen is intended for kids (Pokemon, Sailor Moon, etc).

If you think Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is intended for kids, then you never read the manga or even seen the "Stars" season that thank god was never touched by DiC or CWi. And nether has these joe blows that still has the ignorant mainstream mindset that all japanese animation is just something for kids.

But guess what...it's also true of the mainstream media, who's still trying to play catch up with video games.

Jesus, anime is smarter than stupid Jersey Shore and all those other reality shows. If the country I live in doesn't understand that, and they think I'm some super nerd, then hell yeah, I'm "Super Nerd!" (insert superhero theme song here) There has to be at least one anime that an American would like, then they would understand, then there would be more super nerds lol

Americans tend to hate/fear what they don't understand....i include myself in that equation. i honestly think the guy that decided animation is for kids was the same one that killed the "Golden Age Of American Comics" with the comic code.
