I can't really explain "smooth" animation well so I'm just going to give an example:

For those who've seen Samurai Champloo; the fight scene sequences look amazing. When a sword is swung the opposing force actually has to dodge it in a creative fashion. There are no "skipped" frames cut to a clashed swords or simply 2 blurs moving past each other with clashing noises. Each battle is meticulously choreographed and everything seems to flow together.

Only other anime(s) I can think of that recreates the animation I'm looking for is: Time of Eve, Ergo Proxy, Baccano!, and a lot of Miyazaki's movies.

If you know what I'm talking about and you know other anime that have this kind of smooth fluid motion do please tell.

Edit:

Thank you all for your responses, I wasn't expecting that. One of you mentioned I should make a list. Though my knowledge of anime is somewhat limited and I'm only going to list the ones I've seen personally.

Samurai Champloo
Fooly Cooly
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Time of Eve
Ergo Proxy
Baccano! (and Durarara)
Eureka Seven
Eden of the East
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Summer Wars

American v Japanese animation: Who brought this up? I'd appreciate it if you could stop littering a topic with another.

Katanagatari and Ghost in the Shell are two that I can think off the top of my head that should have some good smooth animations. Cowboy Bebop while 10+ years old now has pretty good animation as well. Not sure if you like Gundam but Gundam Unicorn has great animation as well. A lot of shounen animes like Fairy Tail are guilty of having not so fluid animation so you should probably start by checking out seinen type animes.

Movies and OVAs have "smoother" animation than the series do as a rule. I was impressed by the animation in the Eureka Seven movie most recently.

Unless its some high budget movie/OVA, anime that fills your "smooth animation" criteria is less than 10% (I'm pulling this percentage out of my ass, but you get the point).

Seriously Spongebob Squarepants alone > most anime in terms of animation.

That cat made me giggle. Thanks for making my day.

You may be surprised at this but the battle scenes in FMA Brotherhood are very smooth. I was impressed like "WOW, I CAN SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING. YAY" rofl

Come back to me when Japanese animated tv series starts using lip sync, then we'll start talking.

Artistic style of anime (in other words detail) is arguable, but for the most part animation in anime is crap. And this is coming from a guy who generally likes Japanese cartoons more than Western cartoons.

Actually yes. I love Disney animated movies so I guess that's okay.

Probably the smoothest animation this season is [email protected] I kid you not; its got some of the best animators in the business working on it, and probably the biggest budget series overall.
