I currently own 211 series on dvd (haven't watched em' all), but what I was wondering was what animes people ave watched that happen to have unique storylines and are much more interesting because of that nowadays. I feel like some storylines are so run of the mill, not that they aren't enjoyable I just like to see if I have any or should buy some more anime since they are entirely their own and unlike the others

I agree with some of the anime listed above, ESPECIALLY Angel Beats! I really recommend that anime...

I would also recommend Gintama if you have not heard of it, or Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei...

oh, and C: The possibility of Money and Soul Control, was a really, really good anime...

^those.
but i dont agree with [C], cos it's.....normal(?) and the only unique thing about it that it got this financial groups and the lead protagonist is a uni student although the anime is PG13+. i was hoping for something more complicated.

i'm gonna name all my favorite animes :p keep in mind that I'm interested in animes about character development, friendship and I will consider them my favorites according to the amount of feelings and motivation I'd feel while watching them, don't care about animation as long as the story is good. I'm not interested in high school romance and mainstream anime like naruto, bleach etc since they are very predictable and those types of stories have been done a lot.

Fantastic children
.....don't mind the title, but this anime amazed me because of its unique story and characters. It made feel many emotions...it's just great!

Monster.....a psychological anime for mature fans. Excellent story! almost 20+ characters all of them very unique and equally important and the story is not predictable, it doesn't have fighting or exaggerated jokes to keep you interested. This is the kind of anime/manga I wish to spend my time on.

Berserk.....my #1 anime, the only thing I didn't like was the end because of the biggest cliffhanger ever! but then again, we have the wonderful manga to continue!

Major....another anime about sports, but this one made me watched a whole season in one day! I'm the kind of person who watches one or two episodes per week....will only watch more than 2 if the anime gets my attention. This anime is packed with very likeable characters, they're not perfect but that's what make them unique. I love the story of the main character and we see his life since childhood until adulthood, I also had the feeling of accomplishment, never give up for your dreams etc...I like it when an anime teaches you something useful.

Terra E or Toward the Terra....you don't have 100% evil or 100% good characters here, although it seems that way at first but they're all just human, and this one takes the cake for character development. It was perfect from beginning to end....I cried, cried A LOT in the last episodes.

Moribito.....I thought the story was unique and the heroine is strong and smart. No girly, weak, stupid gilrs as main character.

Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin.....gosh this anime is like real life, so cruel and unfair!!!! it is about 7 guys who struggle in jail together, they have strong bonds but was not easy at first. In the anime, we see why they're in jail and how they overcome their obstacles. Some episodes broke my heart in million little pieces, not for the kids since it deals about many mature stuff (rape, drugs, violence etc)

nah chrome, more or less a thread for everyone to discuss unique storylines (they're so rare now -_-) so now let's see I only watch dub so that hacks off a few but I actually think I own most of the ones recommended so far and if I don't it's on a list XD I happen to think a lot of the new funimation limited edition releases are granted to series that are for the most part pretty original. I own all but haven't watched em all yet. There's:
-Sacred Blacksmith
-Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
-Black Butler
-Chrome Shelled Regios
-Ga-Rei-Zero
-Rideback
-Baka and Test
-Hero Tales
-Dance in the Vampire Bund
-Spice and Wolf 2 (8/30/11)

What are your opinions on their originality?

Serial Experiments Lain. Notoriously known for its heavy use of symbolism and obscure computer terminologies.

Paranoia Agent.
Mass Hysteria at its finest. No anime could exemplify this than Paranoia Agent.

Ghost Hound.
Anime that explores the human mind and the delusions that haunt us all.

Ghost in the Shell. One of the few anime that speaks of philosophy and politics.

Kuchu Buranko, or Welcome to Irabu's Office
As my friend puts it, "The animators were on drugs when they did it."
BUT!!! It's based on a light novel. And once you get used to the style, IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL.
It's about a pychiatrist, who solves problems in the weirdest ways.
OK, fine it's not really that unique.
BUT AS AN ANIME AS A WHOLE IT IS UNIQUE IN COMPARISON.

Anyways, putting them back out there again, with some new ones...
Bakemono,
FLCL (Everything was unique)
Higurashi,
Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
Kyoran Kazoku Nikki (setting is unique, kinda weird, but good overall)
Madoka,
Maria+Holic
Paranoia Agent,
Saki, (Setting is unique, but it's still good)
Sayonara Zetsubou,
Seitokai no Yakuindomo, (Again, it's the setting that's unique, not the anime, and again, it is good.)
Serial Experiments Lain,
Steins;Gate,
Welcome to the NHK,
Yakitate Japan (Setting was unique, anime was alright)

Just saying, Ano Hi was actually very cliche. What was GOOD about it, however, is the way the executed it. It WAS good, just saying it doesn't fit into this thread.

lol it's not recommendations for me I wanted to make a thread for the whole community who like unique animes, I just happen to be a collector and haven't watched everything I own, and I personally only watch dub so seeing some titles that are sub give me hope for a dub with a license so far most of the dub series mentioned I own and have or haven't watched :P
Now, just as an addition to the discussion, I happen to think The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye was quite interesting and unique but I haven't watched Desert Punk yet so maybe I'm wrong?

I think someone who could come up with these type of powers is a genius!!! Both series have very good and unique anime plot. Most especially, Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi ( A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives WARNING: It's very perverted!)

Ryner Lute(The Legend of the Legendary Heroes- not perverted): has the power to deconstruct objects and people without doing anything.
Taito Kurogane( Itsuka Tenma no Kuro Usagi(A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives- very peverted!):

I second this.

Durarara is the most unique anime I've seen in a very long time.
