Thousands of evacuees on Sunday returned to their home towns in the Tohoku region, devastated by the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis, to mark the Bon festival. Many memorial events were held for the victims in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
Many people returned home to clean up or repair gravestones damaged by the quake and tsunami, NTV reported. Others returned to the sites where their homes used to be before they were destroyed by the tsunami.
As of Aug 1, 15,690 people are confirmed dead and 4,735 people are still missing in the devastated region, according to government figures.
