Do you think marching band is a sport? and if so Why is the stereotype of a marching band person a Nerd?

-my own answer
I believe Marching band is a sport by far actually to multi-task, playing, blowing into an instrument and marching it takes alot of work.. Marching band is based on the marching band in the army so when we goof of or something we get push ups. Also to march in the summer when its super hot out for 4 hours of the day is really hard. Also it depends on what instruments you hold. those sousaphones can way up to 60 pounds. Even sometimes in marching band you have to run backwards, forwards, side to sides. Usually people who say it isnt a sport has never been in marching band. And if you are, then try a different band cuz every band is different. I have no why they say its for nerds cuz those nerds would be pretty tough, you know haha

im in marching band and i really dont think its a sport, because its really not that hard.

i guess since u have to have some type of intellegence to learn music, but the people in the band at my school are some of the most popular people in the school and tend to be the ones who gets the prettiest girls/guys in the school

It's an extraccuricular activity, not a sport. I'm sure someone will argue semantics though and say all extracurricular activities could be viewed as sports. Which, I can't really argue with, but something I can't entirely agree with either.

Well duh! It requires lots of strength and concentration. Anyone can pick up a ball and throw it right but not alot of people can pick up an instrument play it right and march. And I am no Nerd~ Well I am but not the weak kind XD

I think that now a days, marching is more of a sport. You do a lot of running now, while being in step with other people, some even playing at the same time. You have to be a little more athletic now, compared to awhile back. I used to be in the marching band around 2000, and I will admit that y'all do a heck of a lot more, it amazes me! As for the "nerds", we didn't really have nerds in our band. It was really just a lot of kids that wanted to make it somewhere in an organization (meaning, going to State) and loved going to competitions. I'm from a small town (3A), and in our town, the band was the most popular organization to be in, compared to other sports, because the Band was more likely to go somewhere. So we were lucky that our band wasn't put down, or that we were "nerds".

Whether or not marching band is a sport depends on the school/organization the marching band is associated with and what the band's focus is. For something to be considered a sport, its primary purpose needs to be competition. Most marching bands I know of were formed to support another sports team and not to compete, so in those cases marching band is not considered a sport even though they may still participate in competitions.
