The only one I can remember being in was about 3 years ago. I remember that it woke me up, but it wasn't until the next morning that I knew for certain that it wasn't a dream.

IIRC some people weren't so lucky. I think a couple of people were killed by falling masonry and the like

Yep, I live about 30 miles from the epicenter of the one today in Mineral, VA. I was actually in Henrico Court House on the second floor when it hit, was definitely violent shaking for about 30 seconds, but the building was still swaying for a good two minutes afterwards. I could hear the walls creaking...it was a bit frightening but exciting at the same time. My husband said the first ceiling tile that fell he would have been in the parking lot. About 10 minutes later they did evacuate us so that they could be sure the building was still safe.
Crazy day. Now we get to wait for Hurricane Irene...

It's been a real long time since I experienced an earthquake, there was a big one that happened when i was in 3rd at school, right before PE. It felt really scary to me everything was shaking at the moment it reminded me of a roller coaster.

Oh, it was felt here. Of course, it was the first one I'd been through, and quite a few things fell off of the shelves here.

Nope......I live where there are quite a lot of tornadoes though...

No, never felt one. Where I live is thousands of kilometres away from a tectonic plate boundary.

Just goes to show that earthquakes can happen just about anywhere. Surprised it was felt so widespread though. Last big earthquake I remember feeling was the one near Mexicali in Baja California last year, and I barely felt that at all and it was a 7ish magnitude if I recall.

Scariest one I felt was the Northridge quake. I think I was in Jr. High at the time. Woke me up and my heart was racing a million miles an hour. Plus my grandparents lived just a few miles from the epicenter so I was very worried about them.

My own house is just a couple miles from the San Andreas fault so yeah, really looking forward to that "big one" they've been cautioning about since I was little.
