Probebly based on what the person have been taught.

I don't even know what loyalty means. No matter how many times I read about it.

loyalty is a very fluid term, i think it depends on the circumstance... there are animals who are monogamous their entire lives, that is a form of loyalty... it is instinct, it seems, for them to do that...

instincts are shaped and honed through centuries of evolution, as are genes, the correlation of which leads me to believe genes do play a part in whether an animal may be predisposed to be loyal to another for whatever reason...

as far as humans are concerned, i'm not entirely sure... we're much more diverse and evolved than animals, so i don't find it necessary for us to carry such genes... we have free will and we use it to decide who to place loyalty in...

short answer: as cold and analytical as it sounds, loyalty is based on a calculation for humans... a very lengthy, intertwined, complicated calculation that differs from person to person...

entirely my opinion, though...

I think it depends on the personality and life goals.

My loyalty isn't something I give away. My trust is abit easier to earn, though for me to actively go out of my way for you you have to be important. Very important. Still, I'll always work for my benefit regardless I'm loyal to someone or not. Either for material gain or for inner peace. As much as I love to stroke my ego, I'm just like any other human: Selfish and needy.

People can't be naturally loyal, no. I don't think so. Because people will always work for their own personal gain. Whether they know it or not.

To people I'm not loyal to, it isn't a matter of if I stab you in the back, it's a matter of when.
To people I'm loyal to, there isn't a day that passes by I don't hope for your happiness.

Loyalty is a moral value

No one is born with knowing which value is correct or not; moral value is taught.

As far as humans go, loyalty is an extremely difficult trait to come by, probably because it requires a certain degree of trust. That's just generally speaking. It's even more difficult to find that in an intimate relationship. Difficult, but certainly not impossible.
