I noticed a trend within the anme fandom. It seems a larger percentage of people, when picking their favorites, gravitate towards the more stoic characters rather than comedic characters. I don't get it. What is it about this character archetype that people are psychologically more attracted to? Do people often associate badassness with aloofness? Or do some people just not have a sense of humor?

Personally i find few comedy characters to actually be that funny, except almost the entire cast of Gintama......that show constantly has me in stitches

Because comedic characters can get annoying. I don't know. I'm just saying shit.

Depends how they're comedic you know. Like in Gintama, the jokes never get old, so the comedic characters never get old either. Not to mention people seem to naturally pessimistic, so when you run into the overly happy/comedic character they come off as annoying. I don't know I'm just trying to sound smart

Maybe because they're cooler than comedic chara?
But I also doesn't like comedic chara except in manga/anime comedy

People like characters thata re in 'control',a nd can 'handle things'. they're mature, and radiate that 'cool'. They're mysterious, you want to crack them open. Whata re they planning? How are they feeling? It makes you want to understand them. Not to mention, stoic characters personal development throughout a story tends to be more subtle and introspective over out and active. Which is attractive to a lot of people.

Very few comedic characters are worth trying to learn or understand. Personally i dislike comedy anime. Except when its done right like Gintama , I dont mind comedic situations with stoic characters but comedic characters themselves, i could care less about them.

Look at it this way: comedic characters always will either get hated or loved. As People may think they are extremely annoying, their hate base becomes stronger.

Take haruhi for example. At first her poPularity within the series was unmatched. But now nagato and even the great kyon has over taken her perhaps, this is due to her being too much of a bitch.

And nagato, on the other hand, has gained more fanbase as at first no one really hated her. And infact, people liked her for her combat abilities and lack of exposure-moe. Then when people understood her, she was liked even more from the once neutrals.

In essence: stoic characters can be cooler/ cuter when they are un masked. But funny characters tend to have more hatebase.

well, comedic characters get on your nerves sometimes...for me, i can't always be around a person who's always cracking jokes...but like a calm and composed person never gets tiring...they're just always really collected...i definitely like that kind of person!

I don't get it either. They're so..... dull.
REAL Funny characters >>>>>>>>>>> Stoic >>>>>>>>>> Trying-too-hard-to-be-funny characters

Maybe more people can relate to them?

But that's the thing. I find it hard to relate to those kinds of characters because 1) I don't know what they're thinking 2) they're usually very boring and 3) no one can possibly have no emotion ALL THE BLOODY TIME! It's just not natural! I prefer characters with a little more of a sense of humor because I can relate to them more. I can be kind of a goofball sometimes, so I guess it's natural for me to gravitate towards the funnier characters because they seem like they would be a lot of fun to hang out with. Catch my drift?

Me I LOVE stoic characters. Because comedic characters could be very annoying very fast.

Take Lambo-san from Katekyou Hitman REBORN. He is so annoying. As well as Haru, would you really want to know a person THAT ANNOYING and irritating in real life? Would you really want to know a 5 yr old, selfish kid, who will NEVER own up to his actions, and will fart in your face?

When it comes to the stoic characters. They are mysterious. Mysterious = sexy. At least to me. Normally, they are very strong. Perhaps even the strongest. Like Hibari from Katekyou Hitman REBORN. and Lord Sesshomaru from Inuyasha. Sometimes, they have excellent mental strengths like L from Death Note.

And well, it all depends on what you are attracted to. Again, I love stoic characters because they are strong, mature, sensible, practical, and mysterious. They seem like the type of person that should they ever become your ally, that they would be the BEST ally you could ever ask for. As oppose to somebody who is annoying and irritating. I mean, I would love to have Lord Sesshomaru and L (Death Note) as an ally as opposed to Lambo or Haru (Katekyou Hitman Reborn.)

I tend to shun people that I think are too annoying. But when a person is all calm, cool, and collected. I just want to be around them for their intellect. They just seem to have their act together.

It's great to be fun and playful, but there is a difference between being fun and playful and being ANNOYING. So many people wanted to SHOOT Lambo. I have seen SO MANY comments of people wishing that he would just die because he's SO ANNOYING. Comedic characters normally are always annoying, instead of witty or cracking up jokes.

Stoic characters often gives you feeling that they are mysterious. They are generally the quiet type and they never emote (except under extreme stress) making them look like a badass character which is hard to read. What's more interesting is that most audience are waiting to see them breakdown and see person who hid under the mask of stoicism.

Just think of Batman and why people love him.
