Do you focus on proper grammar and spelling?
Posted 8/30/11
Poll states. I've been observing the spelling and grammar of most users on this site, and it's pretty bad. I'm not saying I'm that good myself; I still make plenty of errors. I'm guessing that most people lie about their age, because I don't know a single 22 year old who speaks like this:

Also, as a side note: Do you consider people who practice proper grammar an "Elitist"? As in, somebody who think they're better than you?

I am often pedantic with it, actually. However, it is usually an advantage.

To answer your "elitist" question, it depends on the tone and intention of the writer/speaker. As long as one is not correcting another's grammar over and over again in very conceited ways, I do not think it is elitist. However, practicing proper grammar for the purpose of putting others down (and bombasticism) is elitist.

Spelling and grammar matter an awful lot when you're making an impression on people you don't know. The internet is a great hive of people you don't know. I think it matters because you don't know exactly who is on the other end of the line.

Absolutely with Myaako, though, on the elitism idea. If you're condescending, you're being an elitist jerk; English isn't necessarily the first language for a lot of posters, especially in a forum devoted to a foreign art form. If you're respectful about important corrections, or if you're leading by example, there's nothing elitist about it.

I try my best. I do not think that I have made too many mistakes in my spelling and grammar; but of course, to err is human. I've probably made mistakes here and there, but if I am not familiar with spelling a certain word, I'll check up on it.

Ahh! Very good. Thanks for replying guys, my hope has been restored! To MGM (For lack of a better way to name ye), I truly enjoy your reasoning. I've seen too often people putting down others for not knowing whether to use "Their" or "There". I'm glad that there's still people who focus on the good of the internets.

I make plenty of mistakes myself, mostly with "To" and "Too". For some reason, the proper pronunciation (Is that correct?) has always evaded me.

EJBlue, precisely. To err is to human, and no one is the wiser. In my case, I used to read books at a young age, before I even knew what most words meant. You'd be surprised at how many strange words are in a Dean Koontz or Stephen King novel. As such, I made up my own definitions along the way, and they tend to stick...

Geek - That's right, I never did think of that. Ah, wot a silly one I be at times. My little box is always squared around native English-speakers, as such I tend to forget that there are others.

I try my best (most of the time.) But since English is not my native language my best usually isn't as good as others.

@ Chaos: You're better with English than most native speakers ever will be. So, take pride in the fact that you can best us English-speakers :P.

Edit: For some reason, those sentences sound weird. Maybe I'm just tired...

Ahhh, it's so nice to see today's youth putting in an effort. In this era of text messaging and internet slang, I honestly wasn't expecting so many heartfelt responses. I shall now go make some hot cocoa and celebrate!
