When you hear the words "Modern Art" what pops into your head.

When you hear the words "Modern Art" what pops into your head.

Does Duchamp ever cross your mind with "Modern Art"?

Don't worry ^ - ^. I did not know that I like modern art until I took a modern art history class. I have not yet thought about anime, cartoon, and manga to be modern art. hee..hee..after I took modern art, and I could describe in these five words what this art is about: sex, shit, pee, mockery, and self-express(in one's own body or issues in environment/politics), because my class discussions were around these categories.

So, some of the art is about complaining about crap and being vulgar? The modern art I don't like is the ones that don't take much skill to do. Some is just splotches of paint on canvas. Anybody can do that.

Autumn, Vega is derailing your thread. I suggest you don't let him do that.

Oh I'll just put this rope on a podium....and it becomes art! Really?! There is an actual piece like that.

This is why I prefer painters, illustrators, graffiti artists, tattoo artists and graphic designers, that is true skill which takes years to master. Abstract does not do it for me at all.

I will say this though, people go into museums like "My kid could do that" when actually they couldn't because it will always be different so I'll give em that. But its still shit

It's a fault of mine but I associate "modern art" with minimalism, a movement I generally dislike. I know modern art encompasses much more than minimalism, a lot of which I do like such as Anselm Kiefer, I just don't immediately think of the other areas when I hear "modern art". I don't know many of Duchamp's works (Nude Descending a Staircase is the only one I can name) so he doesn't cross my mind. Cai Guo-Qiang's work is pretty cool, is it considered modern art?

Modern Art actually refers to artistic works produced from 1860s to the 1970s, especially abstraction....and Duchamp does fit into this category.

I think when most people talk about "Modern Art" they are referring to Contemporary Art, minimalism or Process Art.

I could go into a very long rant about the importance of these styles that so many people seem to like to bash, but what it really boils down to is finding new techniques, tools, and mediums of expression which can be incorporated into new wonderful creations. I'm sure most of have favorite art works that simply wouldn't exist without the movements behind them.
