Wow! Thanks for stating your opinion. A lot of people are reluctant about this topic.

I am with you on the legal anime. I'm so glad that the big companies like Funi and Viz are *finally* getting it, that this is a digital age. I love that even YouTube now has a ton of legal anime under the Animation and Cartoons category on the Shows tab. I had to push myself a bit to get it through my head that the unlicensed stuff is alright to watch. I never download, either. Streaming is the one for me.

When you watch an unlicensed series, do you necessarily buy it when it does get licensed?

Depends on how it's released. I like to try and force myself to watch something first before I buy it, BUT I do make exceptions for series or movies that are really cheap or ones that are classics and that I'm sure to like. So, again, I give myself some wiggle room.

I only try and buy complete collections or else there'd be no end and I think I would go insane. They just released Durarara as three volumes. There's no way I'd buy that for only 26 episodes, especially at the price they're asking. I'll just man up and wait until it they release it as a whole series. Katanagatari is another one I would like but the price for one half of the series on blu-ray (although the episodes are an hour long) is like $50+. FMA or Utena on the other hand is an example where it's most likely going to be cheaper and easier to go ahead and buy the separate volumes.

I run into that problem a lot. Luckily, I do have access to a used DVD store. I've walked out of there with anime DVD volumes for less than a dollar. They always have great sales on the anime. There is new stuff, too...I got the complete series of Fate/Stay Night for around 30 dollars and Sakura Wars for 20 something. I actually also found the first season of Magic Knight Rayearth for only 14 dollars.

When I go there now (I pretty much bought all of the used anime that I'm interested in), they don't really restock quickly. The fairly new shows are still in "volume mode" and are quite expensive. I've been wanting to watch HaruToki, and the brand new DVD vol. 1 was over 20 dollars and only contained 2 episodes! That, to me, is one of the biggest thing about released anime that bothers me.

Also, I believe that part of the reason why new anime DVDs are usually so expensive is that one pays for the sub and the dub. I know everyone has their own preferences...But many anime fans I've come in contact with prefer subs. Think of how much cheaper everything would be if they just gave subs...I think they should at least release a sub/dub version and a sub-only version........

Alas, I rant.

It's nearly impossible to find a complete series through volumes where I shop; it's very sporadic so it's quite cumbersome. Another thing is that I almost always pay for my music so it takes up some of my budget. I'm a musician of sorts and while I don't feel irked at all when people download illegally I just find it more rewarding to pay for music. I really don't have any good justification other than paying for the things I like.

I just can't make myself buy in volumes unless they have 13 episodes. You're right through in that I'm sure the English audio is figured into the price. The other thing is that some volumes do come with some cool extras but I've never cared for much of that. Just give me the show in good quality and I'll shut up. I like to think that since American blu-ray players are the same region as Japan and that it can't be too bothersome for them to put in English subtitles that it gives us a new wealth of possibilities to buy anime.

I have not ventured into the realm of Blu-ray, as of yet.

Oh, I also pay for all of my music. I think that the creators should get the money from their works.
