Reading man jailed for dead girl 'trolling' insult

A Berkshire man has been jailed for posting abusive messages online about a schoolgirl after she committed suicide.

Sean Duffy, 25, of Reading, was handed an 18-week sentence for posts on social networking sites about Worcestershire teenager Natasha MacBryde.

He previously pleaded guilty at Reading Magistrates' Court to sending indecent or offensive communications.

Police said Duffy also posted abuse about dead teenagers in Northumberland, Gloucestershire and Staffordshire.

Duffy, of Grovelands Road, admitted two offences of "trolling" a term used to describe the trend of anonymously seeking to provoke outrage by posting insults and abuse online.

So what are your thoughts?

Silly how online bullies label themselves as trolls, what does it make them feel good about themselves or something?. I thought there was a difference between trolling and just being a plain bully?

Serves the stupid bastard right. "Trolling" or being that degree of an asshole is way past the line.
To me a troll is posting a fake episode of anime or a vid on youtube which has little effect other than to waste someone's time. To actively take the piss, especially out of some people who really didn't deserve to die?
The shithead got some of what he deserved.
Supposed aspergers or not...he deserves what he gets, as does anyone who takes bullying to that level.
Many people make jokes about dead people/dead girls (Hell, who hasn't heard at least 1 Maddi McCann joke and laughed a little bit?!) but directly acting to put that kind of content where the family are going to find it?
Utter dick.

It's hard to say. Since freedom of speech is one of the first ammendments. However rather than jailing I think they should have just pulled the plug. To me it (trolling ) comes under terrorist acts. Confistgate his computer and forbid him access to the internet like they do with Hackers. And the have all the neighbors know that there is a peice of shit living in the neighborhood.

Terrorist acts? I don't think being a dickhead on the internet is on the same level as terrorism.

Trolling is the art of creating entertaining responses from a person or group of people through provocation, but it does not cause any lasting effects (maybe wasted time in the case of fake videos). Generally trolling is done in a manner that is hilarious to all but the one being trolled, and even then there are times when the person being trolled will catch on and laugh too.

This was not trolling, but another act called griefing, which is when a "troll" takes things too far and begins perform acts that will have lasting effects, such as researching and releasing info about a random person online such as address, phone numbers, photo's, etc. It is also griefing when you go after the same target multiple times for the sake of it being the same target.

Trolling is the art of creating comedic situations where in hindsight all can laugh at the situation.
Griefing is the practice of being a stalker, of showing a lack of self-esteem, and of being a dick for the sake of being one,

Know the difference, and let the good trolls roll!

Interesting. You can't be jailed for this in the states, due to Freedom of Speech in the Bill of Rights; not all things unethical are illegal here in the U.S., although you can still get into legal trouble and incite a civil lawsuit if slander/libel can be proven, i.e. it can be proven a falsehood and is the direct cause for hardship.

Due to the increase in online bullying, there has been a movement to legislate against it. I don't believe it would cover protecting someone who's already deceased, however.

Yeah! That asshole, saying mean things to people! In my opinion everyone should be nice to each other or get burned in an oven. Justice has been served.

Griefers are bad people, yes. I don't know what the guy said and it could have been disgusting, but these are actions that should get you banned from a forum, not put in front of a court.

Holy F, seriously? Sure the guy's a douche, but.....really, prison for squawking online? Maybe the guy should get a good punch in the face, but it seems a little overkill to have to go to jail over something like that. Oh internetz, what has become of thou....? :(

"Freedom of Speech" is not "Freedom from Consequence." People tend to get these two confused. Of course, you have the right to behave like an asshole, yet don't be surprised when you find yourself in a rather unfortunate set of circumstances because of it. This article is the perfect example.

Are you saying that because she was a "slut" depending on what you mean by that (please explain btw) what he done was not wrong? She was a 15 year old girl who killed herself because of bullies. Probably people like you.
