I personally agree and watch all of Funi's stuff on their Youtube vs their own site. first off it might be my imagination but the 480p seems like it's better quality. Secondly, no commercials (or rather 6 ~30 second instances of "we are unable to display .....") Don't take that as me saying I want my anime for free, but that if it is available without the commercials I'll take it. If Funi started a pay service similar to CR with HQ vids sans commercials I'd be first in line with money in hand.
But on the topic of Squid Girl I am (insert de-geso adjective here) excited to watch. Although it might as of now say they are premiering it at what seems like an early time, I would hope they wouldn't make such an obvious mistake. What is its premier time (on the earliest network) in Japan?

Tokyo is 16 hours ahead of PST timezone, so Crunchyroll's release at 12:30 am PST would mean that Squid girl was aired at around 3:30 pm in Japanese timezone. Their time seems right to me

Its a late night anime, so its airing time will be around 12 AM-3 AM. Only stuff that airs during the day are long running shonen anime and kids shows.

Well then it is listed to premier in Japan on 9/26 right? So if it aired at say 2:30 A.M. in Japan on the 26th that would be 10:30 A.M. on the 25th here Pacific time right? So that would put CR's 12:30 A.M. on the 26th 14 hours after the broadcast at 2:30 in Japan on the 26th.

OMG Awesome first title of the season!

@batou01: It is at 12:30 AM PST. That is in about 4 1/2 hours from this post.

It premiers 9/27 in the early morning in Japan, but 9/26 our time.

I'd swear I read somewhere that Squid Girl was taking over Yuru Yuri's airtime, so it's odd that it's coming out 12 hours earlier than YY did. But either way, I won't have a chance to watch until Monday evening.

Yep, this is true. So the logical time it would air would be like 1:30 PM EST on Monday, which is the time I believe Yuru Yuri aired on Crunchy. This current time would be a half day before it even airs in Japan, which means they either made a deal to air it early (very very unlikely, since Japan cares about their own country more), Crunchy is airing on their own, which may cause problems with the publisher, or its an error. I'm betting on it being an error.

Hopefully that means I can watch it on their youtube channel. Might you have some insight here? :3

They have yet to announce any details. Knowing Funimation, I expect they will be late in starting the simulcast, and possibly with the announcement of the start date and time.

I note you are in Texas, so is there a reason you prefer their YouTube channel over Hulu (where it will certainly be available)?

I actually prefer hulu. Don't know why my mind jumped straight to youtube.

I would have thought their YouTube channel would have had commercials, as Nozomi Entertainment's channel does (although most of those seem to be of the "You can skip this ad in x seconds" variety).

Funimation has been running a HD video test since mid-May. It requires the Widevine plug-in, however, so I have not tested it.

As to Squid Girl 2, it airs in Japan at 2 AM on Tuesday, which is 10:00 AM PDT on Monday in the United States.

If Crunchyroll posts it at the time they are now stating, it will be made available 9.5 hours before it airs in Japan. One could expect rips to start spreading on the internet right away, and the news that is available to be widespread on the internet in Japan hours before it airs.

When you consider what happened when ANN leaked an episode of Oreimo before airing, and then only by placing it on a server, not posting it publicly, the effect of this would not be good. It quite likely would not only impact future Squid Girl 2 episodes, but other TV Tokyo simulcasts as well, and possibly most or all simulcasts for the season.

UPDATE: As of 9:13 PM, the countdown on the video page has been corrected, and now shows a premiere that would be at least 30 minutes after broadcast. Danger avoided!
