They took out stuff that made the old anime slow and retained what was necessary to move the plot forward without sacrificing whatever character development you can have in 2 eps. In two episodes we know the same thing, Gon can see in the dark and has super senses and that he has this natural affinity for 'creatures.' Kurapika is damn smart and a smart-ass and so much closer to the boy that he is in the manga. Leorio, I confess, I like what they've done here so far. He annoys me less. They play up the fact that he's less badass but is a darn good doctor. Which I like.

EDIT:
I'm in the process of re-reading my HxH manga (it's been so long) and boy are they following it big time. The only major thing the anime took out was Kaito's part. While watching the second ep. I was trying to remember if Kurapika also heard the people in the creepy town and apparently he did. (Leorio: Well excuse me for having normal hearing... Lol. )

So far 4 manga chapters, 2 episodes. Can't wait.

You're ranting about Kurapika's clothes and chains later in the manga. He starts out, in BOTH manga and original anime, the way he looks in the first two episodes now. He doesn't have a two-piece outfit or chains until he discovers nen and discovers his hatsu. That's way later after the HxH exam.

I'm too lazy to check the color of Gon's boots or Leorio's briefcase.

He may have had 'girlie' moments in the old anime but there wasn't a lot in the manga. Besides, other than the Hunter's Guide which states he is male, there are enough official pictures of him (not fanart) where it is very obvious he is a boy.
