People are so damn busy nowadays and more or less half of CR members are no longer active thats the definite reason why the groups are dead. Second is the CR player buffs all the time so no one wants to use it anymore because you cant go back to a part where you missed resulting in a massive drop of CR users.

To be quite honest, the "groups" feature is hideously antiquated and should be nuked or consolidated. Inactive groups should be archived or deleted. There is far better web technology available that can handle what the current groups do. Besides the tech, they are clumsy, as they are, and fracture the community by creating information "silos".

Google Plus, Google's social network, handles what the CR groups feature once did and does it much better. There are now huge anime circles where video is shared and discussed. The "Hangouts" feature on Google+ is perfect for group viewing of the latest episode of any show.

This entire forum needs to be consolidated. It's too sprawling and inhospitable.

As far as the community shrinking to the size of Detroit...it was inevitable after CR went corporate. The piracy scene binds youth to a rebellious act. CR is nothing more than another corporate anime site, and not a culture as it once was. If they want the community to revert to a culture, they have to find another binder as they did with piracy "back in the day".

Community drain happens all the time. Large forums, such as these, peak as any real life population does. People "grow up", leave and find other things to do. Anime is youth driven for the most part and except for the hardcore fans, most people tend to drift in and out of anime fandom as they age, start dating (for real), and so on.

Not to mention the explosion of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, blogging communities, various flavors of IRC/chat and other P2P forums that are far less corporate.
