the fact that the team has four guys and five girls in it gives me hope that this isn't harem based. which is always nice.

Crunchyroll licensed it from Sentai, which normally obtains only a North American license.

Normally, this would have been a simulcast at The Anime Network, so you still would not have been able to see it (as they offer simulcasts to the U.S. and Canada only). It isn't as if it displaced some other simulcast CR could have gotten.

8 simulcasts have been announced, of which only 2 will not be normally posted the same day they air in Japan. (Wagnaria!! 2's first episode will be late, but after that, they will be posted the same day as aired).

Fate/Zero is one week late because Nico Nico Douga gets a one week exclusive. The alternative would be for CR not to have it at all.

As for Majikoi, you'll have to ask Sentai. They licensed it to CR, so they determine the conditions.

I don't get why some people seem to think CR is doing something wrong. Would you prefer that CR say, "No thanks, if we can't have it same day, we don't want it"?

If that's the case, Crunchyroll could still go to the Japanese right holders and try to get rights for other regions. It happens more and more often that other regions get less anime because of North-America-only companies and it's not really fair. Crunchyroll shouldn't let other North American companies force them into becoming North-America-only too.

Well, they are doing something wrong - calling it a simulcast.

No, because some people will watch the delayed shows. But that is what I'm saying. I bought a membership for seasonal simulcasts. That membership is wasted if I can't watch those shows on the same day.

There are 8 shows I'm interested in this season. Guess how many of them Crunchy is streaming. Answer: 2 and one of them is late-casted (Fate/Zero).

It makes me wonder about the value of my subscription.

Crunchyroll may very well be trying to get additional rights from the Japanese right holders, but that requires a separate set of negotiations. It certainly wouldn't be the first time they have managed to expand the rights for a series, but it doesn't happen often. In some cases, the Japanese rights holder may simply not be interested in licensing streaming rights alone.

It has been noted before that it simply isn't economically feasible for Crunchyroll to get an anime series without the rights for the United States (which usually means getting rights for the Canada, as well). If you want to see how well other regions would fare going it alone, you only need to take a look at sites such as Anime on Demand in the UK.

It is a catch-22 situation that not getting as many series for other areas causes lower subscriptions from those areas, which in turn gives lower revenues for those areas, making it less economical to offer an amount for those areas that a licensor would find acceptable. The only way to break this cycle is for someone to lose money for several years. Crunchyroll can't afford to do it, the licensors have little incentive to do so, which leaves only the subscribers, and they seem to have little patience paying the same and getting less.

If you want to be technical, it can still be called a simulcast as long as some station in Japan airs it the same day. In some cases where CR has a simulcast that is 6-8 days after it first airs, it is because their agreement only allows it to be simulcast with the last station to air it.

For that matter, if you want to get really technical, Crunchyroll nor any other streaming site has ever had a simulcast, as none have been made available simultaneously with a source in Japan. At best, they have been 30 minutes later, but no one seems to have a problem with them being called a simulcast as long as they are within a few hours.

If you really wanted to rail against something being listed as a simulcast, a better target would be something like The Idolm@ster, which is over 3 weeks behind the first airing in Japan.

Again, given that getting it did not displace any other simulcast, how would your membership be any less wasted if those two of the eight series were simply not present?
