Let me say this first. I love Crunchyroll, and I would gladly pay for the premium membership...

But what the heck is wrong with this player?

If I try to jump to a certain point in the video (it doesnt matter if its going back or forward) I have to wait nerly 30s before it starts playing, and then I have to pause one more time so the video wont skip frames.

Note that when I say pause one more time, its just that, I pause for a sec and then the video will play fine, I have no problem with buffering or the like.

I could understand if it was something like loading that section of the video again, but since its does the exact same thing when going back in the video, I am sure thats not the case.

Im using Win7 x64, with Firefox 7.

Havent tried with others browsers...

The 30s wait is because you are buffering the video for the part you skipped to, but I don't know why it takes so long for you. For me it takes about 5s on 480p and 10s on 720p and I'm only on a ~2.5Mbit connection.

I also don't know what you mean by skipping frames. One problem I have noticed though is if you skip to another part of the video at the same time that the video controls start to fade, it sometimes skips to the part you chose and also pauses the video.

And yes you do have to load the video again when skipping backwards. That is how Flash 'secure' video streaming works. You only keep about a minute or two of video in the buffer at a time so anything you already saw automatically gets unbuffered and needs to be rebuffered if you skip back to it. This is also why you have to buffer video when skipping forwards: that part of the video has not been buffered yet because you only buffer the next minute or two of video.

Ok I think I can understand that... Though I dont get it why cant it be like Youtube or Gametrailers videos?
I tested with Chrome, and its slight faster, but not that big of a difference.
I have a 10mbit connection (though its crap, I can reach at least 5mbit when loading crunchyroll videos)

The thing about skipping frames, huh? How should I put it.
Lets say Im watching an anime and jump to a point after the opening. Once the anime starts playing again, it will sometimes stop the scene and then start playing again (like its bufferring) and it will keep doing this until I press pause/play once then it goes on fine. I dont have to wait for the buffer to go on , etc. Just press once and it plays fine.

So If I understand correct, theres no point in having the video paused and then watching later, because it will only buffer at the best 3min forward?
But if thats how it is, I should be able to instantly go back a couple seconds without the need to buffer, witch is not the case right now.

argh, why cant it work like youtube or any other flash player? Such a pain, specially when you have a crap connection like mine...

Try letting it play for a while when it does the frame skipping. If it stops after 10-20 sec then maybe it is actually a buffering issue. It might be trying to play the video when it hasn't buffered enough yet but on your connection it should probably stop after a few seconds. I doubt this is the case though.

If it isn't a buffering issue then you might want to try updating Flash if you haven't already. Other than that I wouldn't know as I haven't come across that problem. You could also try enabling/disabling Flash hardware acceleration and seeing if that makes a difference but I don't think it will (right click video then settings).

For the buffering, anything you watch is instantly deleted from the buffer so you can't go back without rebuffering, even by a couple of seconds. It's just how Flash secure video streaming works. And since you can only buffer a couple of minutes it is pointless letting it buffer for later.

The reason Crunchyroll has to use Flash secure video streaming instead of normal video streaming (like youtube) isn't known exactly but it is probably because the Japanese companies don't want their anime to be downloaded and illegally shared through other means, especially since Crunchyroll only has streaming rights and not download rights. With normal video streaming it is very easy to download the video, but it is much harder using secure streaming. However, Flash secure video streaming can be circumvented in order to download the video anyway. Really it is just a way for Crunchyroll to show the Japanese companies that they are at least trying to prevent people from downloading, which makes the Japanese companies happy. It might also be a contractual requirement.

By the way, Youtube does actually use Flash secure video streaming as well but only for certain videos. I have noticed it on some episodes of TV shows and movies which have been legally uploaded by the rights owners. They probably use it for the same reason as Crunchyroll.

Ok I can understand your reasoning.
But I keep my point, this player is so bad.

The slower the connection the worst it is to play, and since I can't really count on my ISP to provided me with a realiable 10mbit link.... its quite a pain. Sometimes at 1mbit, sometimes at 5mbit, so random.

Oh well... even though I hate it, it is still the best way for me to watch legal animes, other than importing dvds.
Guess I will just stick with the premium membership and be patient with the player XD

I remember seeing a mention that Crunchyroll was going to update the player soon. That said, "soon" probably means "before the end of the year".
