Japan giving away ten thousand airline tickets
Posted 10/11/11
I'm really not sure if I can post this topic here or in another place. If within rule violation or a duplicate, please report.

In a desperate attempt to lure tourists back to a country plagued by radiation fears and constant earthquakes, the Japan Tourism Agency‘s proposed an unprecedented campaign – 10,000 free roundtrip tickets.

The catch is, you need to publicize your trip on blogs and social media sites.

If this plan is approved, it'll cost more than a billion yen according to the article and Mr. Sato would allow for people to sign up as early as next April. I guess to keep the thread within discussion options still, my question is the country ready for tourism to return? And is it a good idea?

It's predictable and a perfect idea. If I had the money for a trip next year, I'd apply in a heartbeat. There's so many wonderful places in Japan other than those affected by the earthquake and the nuclear disaster.

You can be certain that there's more that 10,000 people lined up eager to spend their money in Japan. To that end, it is already sounding like a good idea. Plus many of these people will probably bring someone with them, potentially multiplying the revenue. Then many yet will share their experiences, the majority will probably be good. With how many people are being selected, plenty of them must have some manner of networking on the internet, thus larger audiences will be hearing of the good experiences.

If 10,000 people spend 100,000 yen (many surveys indicate intentions of at least a 1000 USD budget), that's a 1,000,000,000 income. Right there it already looks like a safe gamble, little room for a loss. But what if those 10,000 tourists are actually 20,000 tourists because of bringing friends? Maybe these tourists will revisit sooner because of their experiences, or people they spoke to decide to go later. That right there looks to me like MASSIVE profit. I don't really think the end result will be an issue, only concern about any potentially immediate effects of the government spending so much. I wouldn't know how what that might impact though (probably other possible alternatives they could have chosen for stimulating the economy).

Also, http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/ was pretty inaccessible after this announcement due to the massive traffic it got in response. So they're probably going to meet their minimum goal from this move.

Don't forget this link:

Here's recent word from JNTO:

Regarding articles that "JAPAN OFFERS 10,000 FREE FLIGHTS TO FOREIGNERS"
Thank you very much for your interest in visiting Japan and for your keen response towards the "JAPAN OFFERS 10,000 FREE FLIGHTS TO FOREIGNERS" news.

Recently a number of media outlets have publicised articles about this, however it is subject to government budgetary approval, and no details have been decided yet.

We appreciate your kind understanding.

Personally, I don't doubt it to be a good move. I'm rather poor, but I'd sacrifice all other funds of mine to spend well there. Plus, maybe unlike here, they may actually have some jobs there I could work during my stay. I maybe it might even be a good idea to put us all in an arena, charge for tickets to the event, and have us fight to the end for these tickets XD

Eh, I don't really like Japan. I'd much rather go somewhere beautiful, like Ireland or Scotland.

Japan's only for the weeaboos and perverts. But it's a nice idea, they could make some good profit from it.

Well before you start making ignorant remarks on another country you should first at least get to know its culture and way of life. Please save your comments elsewhere.

If it was approved and I'm lucky enough to get a ticket,
