Synopsis Chihaya is a lighthearted tomboy, who's not especially good at anything in particular. Her dream has always been for her sister (an aspiring model) to become the number one beauty of Japan, or perhaps of the world. But then one day she meets someone who tells her that a dream is something that should concern only herself - and something she has to work hard for as well. At the same time, Chihaya discovers a passion for the old Japanese game hyakunin ishhu, also called "karuta". Main Characters Taichi Mashima (真島太一) An all-round sportsman, and Chihaya's childhood friend. Because he is a sore loser, he becomes Chihaya's rival in karuta. He seems to have feelings for Chihaya although he has a girlfriend. Chihaya Ayase (綾瀬千早) A determined schoolgirl who "possesses a remarkable hearing ability". She believes that by persevering in karuta, she will meet Arata again, and begins a karuta club at her high school with Majima. While she is beautiful, she is considered too weird, her classmates referring to her as a "waste of a beauty". She has been described as a "tomboy trapped in a supermodel's body". Arata Wataya (綿谷新) A transfer student to Chihaya's elementary school, grandchild of a master karuta player, Arata inspires Chihaya to take up karuta. His dream is to become a karuta Meijin. After graduating elementary school, he returns to Fukui to care for his grandfather. After returning to Fukui, he quits karuta. Other information Episodes: 25 Producer: Madhouse Studios Genres: Drama, Sports Rating: PG-13 - Teens 13 or older Opening Theme: "YOUTHFUL" by 99RadioService Ending Theme: "Soshite Ima" (そしていま) by Asami Seto Official website: ちはやふる ------------------------ So this is an anime about a game called "karuta". I honestly don't know how the game works but I just enjoy seeing the 3 main characters. lol. The three of them were so cute! Too bad they're going back to being teenagers in the next episode. The first two episodes were very heartwarming. Accompanied by good music and very pretty animation, this could be a great show! Although there were some really frustrating scenes (damn you little Taichi), overall, I think this could be the season's "wildcard", if in case Mirai Nikki fails. |

I thought the first episode was fun. The use of flashback, which is usually a bad idea, worked well here. The animation was spotty ... some good, some bad, but over all not horrible. Character design is good. Hate their hair, but a minor quibble.
Not to jacked about the plot so far (karuta). To be honest, I'd rather watch people fight over cheap box lunches, but I'll give this another couple episodes. I didn't think I'd like Saki and ended up enjoying that despite the amateurish hand of GONZO. First episode: 4/5 |

It's great so far, the background music works incredibly well..

Some info: - Wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karuta] The basic idea of any karuta game is to be able to quickly determine which card out of an array of cards is required and then to grab the card before it is grabbed by an opponent. There are various types of cards which can be used to play karuta. It is also possible to play this game using two standard decks of playing cards. There are two kinds of cards used in karuta. One kind is yomifuda (読札) or "reading cards", and the other is torifuda (取り札) or "grabbing cards." As they were denoted, the words in the yomifuda are read and players will have to find its associated torifuda before anybody else does. The two types of karuta cards that are most often seen are the "uta-garuta" and "iroha-garuta". In "uta-garuta", players try to find the last two lines of a tanka given the first three lines. It is often possible to identify a poem by its first one or two syllables. The poems for this game are taken from the Hyakunin Isshu and are traditionally played on New Year's Day. Here's a YouTube video of professionals in Japan playing. It's in Japanese (Japanese news report) and there are no English subs, but it's only 2-minutes long and quite interesting. Some of the players are insanely fast. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUSWwEB2T6U& Hope some of that helps. =^.^= |

I haven't seen the episodes yet, but this series is on my "plan to watch" list. I usually never watch anime according to their current season. I'm still catching up with some series from last season.

I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but within the first five minutes I was hooked. Fantastic animation and characters that tug at the heartstrings.

Waiting to see the trio together when they're older in the coming episodes. I'm hoping older-Arata is still just as cute in his personality. XD
I'm glad CR got this, it had me from the first episode like Hanasaku did. <3 And not many series do that : D |

Kind of caught my eye, partly because it reminded me of Saki (which I really enjoyed) but I wasn't really sure about it. Finally decided to watch it after it got some good reviews on one of the anime blogs I follow. So far after two episodes I have to say it's pretty good so I want to continue it for now.

Ah this anime is so nice! I love it. Im glad they finally started the actual show now. A four episode introduction was... long! But it was a good intro, so I dont mind.
Episode 4 had my heart pounding during the game scene. |
