Hipster (A contemporary subculture)

Hipsters (also scenesters) are a subculture of young, recently settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers with musical interests mainly in alternative rock that appeared in the 1990s.

Christian Lorentzen of Time Out New York claims that metrosexuality is the hipster appropriation of gay culture, as a trait carried over from their "Emo" phase. He writes that "these aesthetics are assimilated—cannibalized—into a repertoire of meaninglessness, from which the hipster can construct an identity in the manner of a collage, or a shuffled playlist on an iPod." He argues that "hipsterism fetishizes the authentic" elements of all of the "fringe movements of the postwar era—Beat, hippie, punk, even grunge," and draws on the "cultural stores of every unmelted ethnicity" and "gay style," and then "regurgitates it with a winking inauthenticity". He claims that this group of "18-to-34-year-olds," who are mostly white, "have defanged, skinned and consumed" all of these influences. Lorentzen says hipsters, "in their present undead incarnation," are "essentially people who think of themselves as being cooler than America," also referring to them as "the assassins of cool." He also criticizes how the subculture's original menace has long been abandoned and has been replaced with "the form of not-quite-passive aggression called snark."

In a Huffington Post article entitled "Who's a Hipster?," Julia Plevin argues that the "definition of 'hipster' remains opaque to anyone outside this self-proclaiming, highly-selective circle." She claims that the "whole point of hipsters is that they avoid labels and being labeled. However, they all dress the same and act the same and conform in their non-conformity" to an "iconic carefully created sloppy vintage look."

Honestly speaking: these are nothing more that someone else's point of view to me. *smiles* And perhaps, my point of view, would probably falls into a similar category of just another point of view... Ha ha ha!!

However, regardless... where we stand on this particular issue, our existence; as breathing, thinking... human,--- remains the same. We are all the same, and yet, somehow... we are all unique...

"I truly believed, that in order for humanity to progress, we must seek a possibility without being bound by principles, and silly point of views. However, if that comes true,--- it will be more likely to be recognized by the world; as a new principle."

Some of the hipsters I've met were kind of snobbish, but that's just my experience.

Q: How many hipsters does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: It’s such a cool number, you’ve probably never heard of it.

My only beef with them is the propagate crap that doesn't deserve it at all. Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR). It's swill. It's always been swill. Unless you're over 50 you have no business drinking it. But in Hipster subculture it's ironic to drink. Just when when quality craft beers really started to take hold of the market a bunch of hipster f*cks flood the market with demand for swill. WTF.

Two hipsters walk into a bar. The first one did it before it was cool, and the second one did it ironically.

I agree with Carbo on this one. Anyone with a label claims they are trying to be individual when really they are conforming and end up not really being individual . Just saying. =)

Hipster” is a media stereotype commonly associated with young middle-class adults who share certain interests or values in alternative cultures, mainly independent label music, film and art. Today, the term is predominantly used as a pejorative label to describe someone who outwardly seeks nonconformity through niche consumerism and boycott against mainstream culture.

The term “hipster” was originally used in the 1940s to describe someone actively engaged in Bebop music and swing jazz social scenes. In his article “A Portrait of the Hipster”[1] published in June 1948 issue of Partisan Review, American literary critic Anatole Broyard wrote:

“The hipster--once an unregenerate individualist, an underground poet, a guerilla--had become a pretentious poet laureate. His old subversiveness, his ferocity, was now so manifestly rhetorical as to be obviously harmless. He was bought and placed in the zoo.”
