It looks to be Japanese from what limited knowledge I have of hiragana and katakana. Do you happen to know the history of this item or its place of origin? I can tell you that a majority is written in kanji but being that kanji isn't really my forte I can't help you there. This is quite the nice find for any historian or collector. If your lucky it could have a deep history.

Take these into the Asian culture threads (probably not Vietnamese or Tagalog), see if you get a hit.

I have not tried to learn Japanese properly, I only know wapanese, but those characters look nothing like Japanese kanji and stuff whatsoever.

this is letter most definitely contains hiragana and though a majority may not be written in hiragana there still stands the chance that it originates from Japan. There is the possibility that this was a letter meant to be sent out of the country or it was written by a foreigner, Chinese most likely, sending a letter home. I may not have any formal training but I can compare shapes to the letters in a book, at the very least.

You may need a specialist to read this. Japanese pre-war and post-war writing standards were very different. I think even a normal Japanese may have a little difficulty reading it. I'm not an expert on the subject so someone please translate away if you can!

It reads "Whosoever finds this note inside an object of (seating?) shall be visited by a (oni?) for (three?) nights. On the third night, your (soul/blood) will be (fed? absorbed?) (to/into) a vessel of (death?)

No, kidding. I say it looks like an old war letter, maybe around WW1. I wouldn't know if it was Japanese or not, since I know nothing of the language. Maybe it's Mandarin Chinese? xD.

Sorry that I can't help :P. Maybe if there was a reward...

It looks to be Japanese as I can see some familiar Hiragana in there. (Ku to be precise)
As to what it actually says I have no idea since I can hardly make out the individual characters. That and I have an incredibly limited knowledge of Japanese characters anyway.
