5) More otaku pandering and normal people pandering stuff (like K-ON! which appealed to 40-year old otaku virgins and 15 year old high school girls).
6) More competent teenagers (separates the west from the east)
7) Less harem (by limiting it to a love triangle).
8) More unique skills like Archer-spamming weapons.

I'm an old school otaku from the 80's but I LUV the anime of today. Awesome stories, animation and characters. I find that I like the Moe style, to my surprise. But, ya, the different studios seem to have narrowed all the looks down to a very few types. More variety would be better.

Still, I have my own suggestions, some that coincide with others.

1. no more mysterious girl/guy shows up as transfer student (I'm looking at YOU Guilty Crown!); it's been done to death. Shows like Bleach made me go nuts when just about *everyone* eventually shows up as a transfer student at one time or another.

2. don't bait and switch the ending all the time just to make it a surprise...it's no longer a surprise, just write a natural ending for chrissakes. You know what I mean, such as the old trick of showing the hero sneaking into a building for the final assault, you have the villain surprise enter a room and kill a bunch of people making you think it's the hero, but then it cuts to a different room and the hero is fine. OK, it's been done. just stop it already

3. I don't mind tsundere, but I'd like the ones that beat up on guys all the time to get arrested and put restraining orders on them. That would be a hilarious first episode of a new series: hero goes to his new school, meets tsundere chick who seems shy at first, he does something to piss her off, she beats up on him--cut to police hauling her away and she *never* comes back to the school again for the rest of the series except in cameos (like she's in a prison outfit or something)

4. enough with overly witty post-modern self aware anime -- I want my stories just to be stories; it's ok to put in metaphysics, philosophy, complex themes and even references to other shows, just keep it to a sane level. Lately, people have been going gaga over "deconstructed" anime like Madoka and Bakemonogatari, but sometimes it gets old. At least for me.

5. tired of the evil bad guy who thinks he has the upper hand, never suspects anything when hero shows up in the open seemingly "trapped" only to be surprised by the real attack (or vice versa when the villain does it to the hero). I mean, come on: "You fool, you show yourself before me, prepare to die!" "No! it is you who will die!" "Feh, there is nothing you can...oh wait, I will retire to my command bunker immediately and no longer expose myself. The timer on the explosive, nerve gas, nuke, final assault has already done it's job, so it's already too late to stop me (ala Ozymandias of Watchmen) anyways. Enjoy."

6. if you tell the kids not to do something, they *will* do it, so don't be freakin' surprised, ok?

7. enough with the crazy, maniac laugh. it's done. OK? it's.....done! Well, ok, maybe one more time if the character is really cool..:)

8. don't force it into an unhappy ending just to be cool and edgy! Kind of tired of the, we gotta be "dark" so everyone is gonna get axed and if they even dream of having boat drinks on the Med with a beautiful girl, they gonna die moments before getting there! It's ok for some people to actually GET WHAT THEY WANT. Just not all the time like Disney, please.

These are necessary in long-running shounen anime.

It doesn't have to be. I think she means recaps not flashbacks.

If she means flashbacks though, they are most definitely necessary due to the fact that manga creators are way too slow.

well, they can be faster, or do it all in advance. Also, not all animes come from mangas.

I do believe that the only ones with flashbacks that are so common and lengthy that they become annoying are mangas with anime adaptions.

I would improve upon bad animes make them stop copying things and also make them better if their not any good. I would have to do it to the original manga or something.

Less flashbacks, we already saw whatever happened
More characters that are over twenty. Oh my Gog, may be even over twenty five!
Less moe/character archetypes, the traits are starting to lose their significance and value
If you're going to have subliminal romance, at least go somewhere with it. Conclude it, I dare you.
A male equivalent of Gunslinger Girl would be cool; something with shotas being mature and badass (oh look at me contradicting myself). That's really more of a personal desire than a serious suggestion, though.
More variety in style (this is the one thing us Westerners got on anime- varying style)

That's all I can think of for now...

Recap eps really get on my nerves!
But a specific answer is in tegami bachi the ending doesnt really feel like an ending... there are too many unanswered questions and there was no conclusion -.-

I also really hate it when animes dont stick to there manga and lose sight of the original story...

What would I improve about anime?

Make all series be 100% true to their manga, and get all of the series animated.
