You occasionally will read stories about and old person who died in their home and no one checked up on them not neighbors let alone friends or family but to not notice a dead colleague for five days in an open office is ridiculous. The body doesn't just start to smell due to decomposition, rigor mortis occurs which would give the appearance of artificial stiffening of the muscles and the skin starts turning blue as there is no longer any internal heat production. He may have been a recluse and kept to himself but how preoccupied could his co-workers have been to miss all of that.

Proof reading medical textbooks would be enough to kill anybody...LOL.

Honestly, you think someone would ask if they were okay if they didn't move. At all. All day. For 5 days.

That's just... wow. Everyone in the building must have clogged up noses then. (Doesn't the body start to smell after a few days or something?) O_O

A dead body begins to smell within 24 hours. What I don't understand is how no one noticed the stench?

Yea, it's the first thing I thought of when I was reading it too. Unless the office already has a pretty bad smell to begin with.

I was going to ask about the dynamics of the stench and then suggest that the employees might have habituated to the scent if it built gradually, as I suspect is the case, but the habituation argument kind of falls apart when you consider that these employees weren't staying in the building the entire time.

But, yeah, this is a sad thing to hear, yet not entirely surprising.

Maybe the high priority on getting work done was the main determinant of the employees' behavior?

I suppose if not for the office cleaner, the employees would only take notice of his death once that lovely smell invaded their nostrils. Morals, awesome, I follow them already. This news is pretty old though, isn't it?

You got a really good point here. Not only that, but the body also loses color.

Poor dude...to be dead that long without anyone noticing means he must have been alone in the world - no friends or family. RIP.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one. He was probably only living for his job. That it was all he had in this life. that's sad

Usually it's the hard workers who go by in life unnoticed, but the slackers who have an occasional 5 minutes of productivity get all the credit.

Hmm... While the link you provided states that the main story posted by stareye_pink may have been an urban legend, it also states that a similar story did in fact happen, so "hoax" seems a little strong in this case. Exaggerated retelling, perhaps?

I'm sure this happens a lot in Germany, Russia, and China anyways.
