Shit, I'm raging at that statement.

Is being an Otaku some kinda reward? It's a bad thing, y'know. And most of you weeaboos who use that word are ever so desperate to go to Japan, a place where Otakus are looked down upon, maybe even more than they are in America. Otaku ain't a rank, it's an insult.

Amen to that! A credit to the manly anime group *puffs cigar*

I think everyone is entitled to be picky to be fair. We can't just watch every anime for the sake of calling ourselves "otakus" (I'd hate to be called that) It's not a badge of honor. A lot of manga/anime is shit and there's probably a minority out there which is good quality in terms of writing and all that. Too many anime now has become otaku pandering nonsense to the point I've become twice as picky. Also there's the fact a lot of people have different tastes. Also there's the fact people are picky because they don't wanna end up watching shit because they have other important things to do IRL.

Just like live action shows, films, books; mediums like anime and manga have more crap than good.

"Do they deserve to call themselves Otakus?"

Never hurts to have a discriminating palate for what you savor or dislike. Advertising execs have been paying large amounts of money trying to determine, inform, manipulate, or change our buying habits for eons. If manga and anime are your forte there's absolutely nothing wrong about having standards and being selective. Bon appetite!

As far as being otaku goes you may be morphing that way if that's your wish; however, whether being one is an honor or a curse depends upon your idea of the parameters of such a mentality or how susceptible you allow yourself to be influenced by what others of like persuasion think if it conflicts with your perceptions. Otaku seem to possess well-defined tastes toward what appeals to them. Whether your future persona and your spending will mesh perfectly with the stereotype or a milder refined variation of this O-C (obsessive-compulsive) behavior remains to be seen. Which paths you choose I bid you Good Luck on that Journey.

I like my anime/manga to be well written, story driven, psychological, and have an appropriate art style.

I pick anime over manga and to be honest I prefer reading american comics than japanese manga
well...since I have read more comics than manga to be exact.

Picky? What the Hell are you talking about? It's all personal preference, it isn't being picky. You like what you like, plain and simple. If you call wanting to read or watch things that you like over things you don't; "picky", then something is wrong.

I just watch what I like. I know plenty of people who don't watch stuff they like because they have a fixed number of shows per season and will drop stuff they enjoy, which makes absolutely no sense to me.
