Give anything a try, unless it's shonenai (Banana Fish is OK though) or yaoi. You never know where there's a bit that'll leave you chuckling massively or going Whoa! Particularly that bit in Drakuun the Dragon Princess with Rosalia and Rua in the desert. Or the battle in Cannon God Exaxxion by the space elevator. Kobato looks pretty fantastic.

Synopsis, reviews, cover, categories, updates (whether it's completely scanlated or ongoing, or things like these)

Smut is prioritized.

I've only read mirai nikki.. I don't read mangas at all, but what hooked me into reading it was cause the first page was extremely creepy (saw it in Narita Airport so I picked it up and read it)..

1. Name or cover.
2. The art type because this is a comic/manga for a reason.
3. the story because that's it's main purpose.
4. genre (100% NO to Yaoi, Yuri is acceptable to a degree, not always for what is beyond and extreme)
5. How long it drags before getting to the point

First, I check the genre. It's gotta be something that I am or will be interested in.
Second, I check the cover title for quality and if it catches my attention.
Third, I read the summary. It's gotta be good and unique. Something that will be worth my time.
Fourth, I would sometimes check the comments and rating if I have doubts about the manga.
Fifth, I read the first chapter. And if it's pretty interesting I will add it to my list. If not, I drop the manga completely never to touch it again. However sometimes I would skip some chapters to see if it will get interesting later.

:)
