Lee Min Jung and Park Hee Soon refuse to appear in a medical drama series

Actors Lee Min Jung and Park Hee Soon refuse to appear in SBS’s new medical drama series The Third Ward which is to be aired in March next year.

Lee said recently, “I’m already considering another drama series to play,” refusing the casting. Park declined the offer as well, saying, “I like the synopsis but current filming schedule will not allow time for that.”

Taewon Entertainment which became famous for producing Iris and Athena is directing The Third Ward. The background of this upcoming series is neurosurgery department of Hyeopjin Hospital which covers both Western and Oriental medicine. Since it is the first series that draw a battle between Western medicine and Oriental medicine, many people build expectations.

Actor Cha Seung Won is mentioned for the role of Du Hyun, the Western doctor, while Park Hee Soon was asked to play for the Oriental doctor, Seung Hyun who is also Du Hyun’s half-brother. Since KBS 2’ drama series Uluntoongtang Detective Agency in 2007, Park’s fans were looking forward to see him playing leading character in a series, but it is unlikely to happen.

Originally, SBS was planning on broadcasting Beautiful Life which tells a story of a nurse; however, casting Moon Geun Young and other actresses was not successful, so the series was postponed to air in the second half of next year. Instead, producer Jin Hyuck of Shining Inheritance and City Hunter and Taewon Entertainment got together and are now preparing to air The Third Ward.

Cha Seung Won will NOT be on ‘The Third Hospital’

Actor Cha Seung Won decided not to appear on the drama ‘The Third Hospital’.

A representative of Cha Seung Won relayed on December 18th, “We received the offer to appear but decided not to participate. We are going to meet (the viewers) with a better project.”

‘The Third Hospital’ is a drama with a setting of a hospital where traditional and Western medicine are practiced together, and it will show the doctors who treat the illnesses with different methods but possess the same passion for treating the patients.

Taewon Entertainment, the company producing the drama, had sent out press material announcing Cha Seung Won had been cast in the lead role, but Cha Seung Won had not given a definite answer. The production company has set out to look for another actor for the role.

Will Eom Tae-woong become the next Sin Ha-gyoon?

For drama "The 3rd Hospital", Cha Seung-won's casting was uncertain... But Eom Tae-woong has stepped in, and the title has changed to "Tower". Sound just like the way that Sin Ha-gyoon stepped in to save "Brain"! Will actor Eom Tae-woong erase the shadow of Cha Seung-won and become the next Sin Ha-gyoon?

Medical drama "The 3rd Hospital" which went through obstacles in casting, but has now changed its name to "Tower" and added Eom Tae-woong. "The 3rd Hospital" has cast Cha Seung-won at first and was to air on SBS. But as he declined the drama, there was a big problem in producing it.

Tae Won Entertainment changed the titled to resolve these problems and now chose a new leading actor, Eom Tae-woong. They are also negotiating with KBS now. Tae Won Entertainment said, "The broadcasting time and company is not important. What's important is to complete the drama, even if we need to pre-produce it".

"Tower" is a traditional medical drama staged in the neurosurgical department of a modern hospital mixing both general and Chinese medicine. "Tower", after having been through a lot, is getting popular and is very much like the currently KBS 2TV drama "Brain".

"Brain" also suffered a change in casting its lead character, Lee Sang-yoon. As Song Seung-heon declined the offer for the role, Sin Ha-gyoon was the next choice. However, as the drama started, it erased all rumors and speculations about the preparation process and saved the face of all KBS dramas.

Sin Ha-gyoon is going through the high peak of his acting career and it earned him the 2011 KBS Grand Prize.

"Tower" is kind of hoping for Eom Tae-woong to create a miracle twist like the one Sin Ha-gyoon did. Eom Tae-woong will be playing the role of Seung-hyeon from the Chinese medicine department. They are hoping to cast another top star as the next leading character, who will also be Seung-hyeon's step brother.

Kim Seung-woo headlines medical drama

So if you’ve been following medical drama-to-be Third Ward at all, it’s been on quite the rollercoaster pre-production journey. First it was slated for SBS with Cha Seung-won attached. Then both SBS and Cha dropped it, and it picked up Uhm Tae-woong as a hero and started shopping at KBS. During that round it changed its title to Tower. But Uhm then went on to do the upcoming Equator Man, and now there’s a new leading man working out final negotiations. If all the Ts get crossed, Kim Seung-woo will be headlining the drama over on cable network tvN. Oh, and it’s called Third Ward again. Phew. Still with me?

The drama is being produced by Taewon Entertainment, the production house behind the IRIS franchise. So it makes sense that Kim Seung-woo would be on their short list, as was Cha Seung-won. I just find it funny that new 1 Night 2 Days bros Tae-woong and Seung-woo have been courted by the same drama. It’s a good thing they’re not a pair of divas.

Third Ward is yet another neurosurgeon drama because, um, there ARE no other types of doctors in dramaland? It’s a battle in Eastern vs. Western medicine, and our hero is caught somewhere in between, having been forced into Western medicine by his father. I’m just glad that Kim Seung-woo will get a drama whole hog as the name-in-lights star, because he was criminally underused in his last drama, Miss Ripley. Why yes, it DOES still anger me. Thanks for asking.

If the third time’s the charm, then Third Ward will air sometime this spring on tvN.
