So Fate/Stay Night anime came first, but Fate Zero is a prequel...so which order should these be watched in now if someone hasn't seen any of either yet?

Fate/Stay Night is a terrible anime, while Fate/Zero has been pretty amazing so far.

I almost got into an argument with a friend of mine over this very topic the other night.

I started watching Fate/Stay Night a while back but never got around to finishing it. Now I started watching Fate/Zero. While all I recognize are some of the names from the other show, I have no problem keeping up with what is going on or the overall significance of it all. In fact sometimes its better NOT to see the show the prequel is based on. Case in point: that whole Star Wars prequel trilogy. I might've enjoyed it a little better if I hadn't already seen the original 3 Star Wars movies years before. At least I wouldn't have groaned or rolled my eyes so much every time I saw George Lucas trying too hard to tie things up or sync them with stuff that supposedly happens later.

I would say Fate/Stay night just to understand the basic concept of how the Holy Grail war works. Watching Fate/Zero first still works since the story of Fate/Stay Night is only slightly related to Fate/Zero. Well, as long as you understand the basic concept and how important the heroes like Saber and Gilgamesh come into the story, watching Fate/Zero first should be fine...

Prequels should be watched after the originals. Period.

Fate/zero was written with the fact that people know what happened in Fate/stay night, so it is recommended to watch in the order of creation.

You should play/read the Visual Novel before watching Fate/Zero. I love the prequel, partly because of its fast pace and tendency to explain things once, if ever. A lot of dramatic weight comes from the context, and the only way to get that is to come in with some knowledge of the 5th Grail War (The Original).

Another option is the Unlimited Blade Works movie, made by the same people who are doing the prequel. The movie is also best enjoyed after reading/playing Fate/Stay Night, and I would watch it between them.

The original anime I have not seen, but by all accounts, it is a sloppy mash up of 2 routes, with vague references to the third. I'm fairly certain that the makers of these anime intend the viewers to have played the game first.

wrong, Unlimited Blade Works was also made by DEEN, and even if the visuals are better than Fate/Stay Night DEEN still butchered the whole thing just like they did with F/SN.

Read the Visual Novel, period. It was simply amazing and in the Visual Novel Shirou is actually more than just an annoying sexist prick. By the way Fate/Zero was made with the readers of the Visual Novel in mind, and ignores all DEEN adaptions completely. So even if you saw the absolute mess that was F/SN adaption you won't get as much from it as you would were you to read the Visual Novel instead.

Definitely play the visual novel first (the H scenes only come in rarely if you are bothered by it)

I completely disagree. History has shown time and again it is always better to watch things in the chronological order rather than the order they're released.

Yes, definitely read the visual novel if you don't mind its length, the anime doesn't do it justice.

Reading Fate/zero first would actually spoil certain things for Fate/stay night, for the visual novel anyways. Do keep in mind Fate/zero was written with the fact people had read Fate/stay night first

OK, fair enough, if we're talking the VN where there is game play involved, then yes one should try FSN first. But I thought this thread was about the anime and whether newbies (those who have presumably never played the VN and only heard about the two anime series) should watch Zero first or not.

I don't know why people bash the F/SN anime so much - it's not brilliant, sure, but it's still one of my long-time favorite series. I've watched it two or three times through, and I enjoy it every time. I understand that they mashed up some of the things from two different story routes in the original game, but honestly for someone who has never played the game, it all seems to work just fine. The UBW movie is also good, but I would not recommend watching it first - it basically crams the first 20 episodes of the anime series into a 15 minute montage and gives no explanation of character motivations or backstory.

That said, I think you'd be fine watching Zero first. The only caveat would be that it spoils some things which are only revealed as plot points much later in F/SN, so some of the surprises related to Rin/Shirou's past gets taken away from F/SN if you have seen Zero.

First time I've seen any of this series. Fate/Zero is perfectly understandable on its own. Only a truly mediocre prequel, adaptation, or similarly derived anime would be so poorly written that it would require you to have read or watched source material. Generally the only case where you need to watch previous material is in the middle of a trilogy or mini-series or similar where it is intended as one 'unit' of media to be watched. Though I watched Kill Bill part 2 before part 1, and enjoyed it without any difficulty in comprehension.

In brief, Fate/Zero is not mediocre. Watch and enjoy, you won't be missing out on anything.
