Why isn't there a cure for the common cold?!
Posted 11/7/11
Seriously why? Its not fair! All you can do is ease it for about 5 minutes and thats it.

Day1: Anger and unknown sensation in nose/throat
Day2: You wake up and your head is suddenly full of mucus in the inside and your nostrils are officially out of order.
Day3: Still full of mucus and probably have a fever and you're a mess because breathing through your mouth dries out your lips and the inside of your mouth and you look like a polished turd.
Day4: All the mucus from your nose has slipped down into your airway and you're coughing your guts out with mucus clots and you sound like you're being murdered in the bathroom when you go to cough and spit it out. Often you cough so much you also vomit up your tomato soup.
Day5: You've cleared the head bunged up problem but now you have to go out in public with a chest infection and contemplate coughing this green stuff up when someone is looking but really...you do the human thing and swallow it.

and Day5 continues for about 2 weeks.

The weird thing is every symptom of the cold is actually working to get rid of it? Mucus fights the bacteria and the reason you have a sore throat is because your immune system is literally exploding the virus cells sticking to the lining of your Esophagus, but also exploding your own flesh at the same time. Disgusting!

Basically, how do you deal with it and what works best for you during this horrible illness? Also, do you think it can be cured one day?

It's because the virus that causees the common cold mutates so fast, that vaccines can;t keep up :/

I sleep more than usual and take Mucinex for the mucus and any anti-inflammatory available if there isn't mucus. Along with an endless supply of cough drops it seems to make things tolerable. It is possible there will be a cure at some point but there is the possibility the cure will just make the virus evolve and be a bigger problem.

They're close. From an NYTimes article dated in 2009:

Cure for the Common Cold? Not Yet, but Possible
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/13/health/research/13cold.html

Researchers said Thursday that they had decoded the genomes of the 99 strains of common cold virus and developed a catalog of its vulnerabilities.

“We are now quite certain that we see the Achilles’ heel, and that a very effective treatment for the common cold is at hand,” said Stephen B. Liggett, an asthma expert at the University of Maryland and co-author of the finding.

Industry hurdles aside, perhaps the biggest reason the common cold has long defied treatment is that the rhinovirus has so many strains and presents a moving target for any drug or vaccine.

It's all a conspiracy. It's all part of the Illuminati's and the lemon tea party's grand scheme.

Lots of C vitamins every day will keep the hero at bay.

Because people will probably never find one.

► The cure for the common cold? There is none.

Yet here are the dirty little secrets about the common cold: Nothing cures it. And most popular remedies have little to no real effect on symptoms.

"In a nutshell, there's nothing that works," says physician Aaron Glatt, a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America. "There's a tremendous industry out there, and some people really swear by them. But there really aren't great studies to show any benefit."

"When it comes to over-the-counter therapies, they're pretty cheap, so people will buy them anyway," Carroll says. "But if they don't work, you shouldn't be surprised."

You have to let the cold run its course. Time. Time heals everything. Except death.

If you made everyone stay inside for 2 weeks it would be the end of the common cold. It only lives because idiots cough or sneeze on people. I am a cashier part-time and if I hear or see someone sick I back away and cover myself. Because of that I have avoided the cold so far for 2 years. People look at you like "how rude" but if I were sick I would expect someone to protect themselves the same way against me.

Thats true, I been drinking Vita-juice which is 100% fruit and vegetable juice every day to get more vitamins and I'm hoping it will at least make the cold shorter.

That's your best bet. It's uncertain whether this works or not though, but better than nothing
